While the popularity of sport utility vehicles continues, the market hasn't always been this way. Isuzu initially introduced the Amigo in 1989, perhaps a bit before its time. Due to slow sales, the mini sport ute left the American market after the 1994 model year. Four years later, the SUV market was a whole new ballgame, particularly the mini sport-utility segment. Since these mini sport utes reached such heights of popularity, Isuzu decided it was time to reenter the mini SUV market. The new Amigo featured a longer wheelbase than the previous generation, creating increased interior space and an additional 13 inches of legroom for rear-seat passengers. Virtually everything about the second-generation Amigointroduced as a 1998 modelwas new, with the exception of the name. Ironically, Isuzu decided to reintroduce Amigo with a new nameRodeo Sportin an effort to focus buyer perception on Rodeo's strong and durable reputation.
