In Europe, cars like the Geo Metro are called "Superminis." Though small and economical, they are larger and more powerful than the famous Austin Mini, and offer a greater level of room and comfort. The Geo Metro debuted as an entry-level hatchback in 1989. When it was redesigned in 1995, a 4-door sedan joined the lineup, as did a more powerful optional engine. Over one third of Metro buyers are making their first new-car purchase, and a majority of Metro buyers are women. Geo Metro models are among the highest-rated in the EPA's fuel economy tests, and the recent sharp increases in gasoline prices may be one reason Metro sales are running 25 percent ahead of last year. The Geo Metro is built in Canada by a joint venture of General Motors and Suzuki, and is also sold as the Suzuki Swift.
