Ford's second-best-selling passenger car after Taurus, Escort made its first appearance on the U.S market 17 years ago. In 1991 a more rounded Escort was introduced, with styling similar to the Taurus. Escort got a jump on the 1997 model year when it arrived in showrooms across the country in the spring of 1996 sporting a fresh new look and a new engine. With this most recent redesign came 25 percent more horsepower, increased torque, and engine modifications that extend Escort's tune-up interval to 100,000 miles. Sleek, rounded features dominate the exterior appearancea big change from years past; even the door handles are flush with the body. Inside, Ford designers delivered a toned-down execution of the oval-inspired motif first seen on the boldly redesigned Taurus. Boosting the sporty appeal of Escort, the ZX2 coupe was introduced for the 1998 model year.
