Back in the late 1940s when the first Ferraris were built, fendered racing cars had to have all the usual equipment for street driving, and most of them were in fact driven to the race tracks. It is in this spirit that Ferrari has produced the F50, a car the company calls its Formula One car for the road. Like today's Formula One cars, the front half of the F50's chassis is a carbon-fiber monocoque containing the driver and passenger, while the V12 engine and six-speed transaxle make up the rear half. Every aspect of the F50 can be directly traced to previous Ferrari racing cars, with abundant use of titanium, magnesium, and aluminum alloys. While the driver and passenger seats come in two sizes (regular and large), they are covered in Connolly leather, probably the only concession to luxury on a car that is, in the truest possible sense, built for speed.
