Introduction
Introduced as the Geo Prizm in 1989, Prizm became part of the Chevrolet lineup in 1998 after the Geo brand line was discontinued. The Prizm underwent a complete redesign that year, resulting in a sedan that is larger, lighter, safer and more powerful than its predecessor. A new body and chassis with improved impact-absorbing crumple zones combines with optional side-impact airbags to offer compact-car buyers a higher level of safety. The Prizm is built by New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. (NUMMI), a General Motors/Toyota joint venture in Fremont, California, and is the mechanical twin of the Toyota Corolla. Nearly three-quarters of Prizm buyers are women, and the automaker says the car's price and dependability are the top reasons buyers choose Chevrolet Prizm.
