Introduced as a 1990 model, the Lumina is Chevrolet's high-value, six-passenger competitor in the midsize sedan market. A thorough redesign for 1995 resulted in a quieter, stiffer body structure and improved interior ergonomics. Aimed at the family market, nearly three-quarters of Lumina buyers are married, and Chevrolet reports that half of Lumina buyers cited the car's very attractive price as the primary reason for their choice. The Lumina is the second-largest sedan offered by Chevrolet after the departure of the Caprice at the end of 1996, and the introduction of the 2000 Impala. In 1998 Chevrolet added the optional OnStar system, an advanced mobile communications package that combines cellular phone and Global Positioning Satellite technologies.
