The Impreza is a particularly well-rounded package and is our top-scoring small sedan. The ride is very absorbent and controlled. Handling is responsive and secure. Acceleration is good, and fuel economy of 27 mpg overall for the sedan is impressive given the standard all-wheel drive. The hatchback gets 26 mpg overall and has a handy-sized cargo space. The continuously variable transmission exacerbates engine noise, and road noise is pronounced, too, our only complaint. The rear seat is spacious for the class, controls are straightforward and easy to use, and visibility is good.
