The CX-5 is competitive in the small SUV class. Handling is taut and agile, with quick, well weighted steering that makes the CX-5 fun in corners. But we found the ride to be choppy. The four-cylinder Skyactiv engine returned an impressive 25 mpg overall in our tests, the best in the category, but it feels underpowered when merging or climbing hills. It's slow at launch and requires prodding to keep up with traffic. The six-speed automatic is smooth; a six-speed manual is available on front-drive versions. The cabin is roomy and versatile, and the controls are simple to use. First year reliability has been well above average.
