Complicated controls, grabby brakes, small cargo area, expensive to get rear camera.
Based on the Focus, the five-passenger C-Max hybrid is clever, well-finished, and practical. In testing we found it rides well and handles with agility. The regenerative braking system helps stretch fuel economy, but makes the pedal feel a bit touchy. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder and electric motor deliver smooth, adequate acceleration and seamless transitions, and it can cruise in full-electric mode below 62 mph. In our tests we got 37 mpg overall, excellent but well short of the EPA's 47 mpg. The Energi version is a plug-in hybrid that can travel on electric power alone for about 20 miles. Ford claims the overall combined range is 500 miles.
