The Equinox SUV is roomy and accommodating, with easy access and a huge rear seat. Once under way, though, it feels heavy and dated. A new 3.6-liter V6 arrived for 2013 and improved acceleration somewhat. But a dithering transmission makes it feel sluggish and fuel economy averaged only 18 mpg. The base four-cylinder has to work hard and returned 21 mpg. Handling is sound if unexceptional and the ride is fairly compliant. Interior components look snazzy, but their materials feel cheap. Chevy's MyLink infotainment system is easy to use, though its touch-screen takes a long reach. High-trim LTZ models bring forward-collision and lane-departure warnings, but lack such common features as push-button start and a dual-zone climate system.
