A step down in size from the 3 Series, the entry-level 1 Series comes as either a coupe or a convertible with a choice of three different six-cylinder engines. The 135i we tested was fun to drive, with excellent steering and body control, as well as a smooth shifter and clutch. It was super-agile and quick around our track, and the powerful 3.0-liter turbo even returned decent fuel economy, averaging 23 mpg. The snug interior is nicely finished but it feels a bit austere. The optional sports seats are supportive and nicely contoured. A stronger 135is arrived in 2013. Reliability of the 128i has been above average, and the 135i has improved to average.
