The Evoque, a new Land Rover model based on the LR2, offers 2-door and 4-door versions. It is powered by a Ford-supplied 240-hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a six-speed automatic. In our tests it returned 21 mpg overall. Acceleration and fuel economy are commendable, but the ride is choppy, and noise levels are elevated. Interior room and visibility are sacrificed for the striking silhouette. Controls are a bit quirky. Routine handling is quite agile but becomes disconcerting at the limits. The Evoque's Terrain Response system allows for moderate off-road capability, uncommon in this class.
