| The Lancer is a major improvement over its dowdy predecessor, and we found it much more agile in our testing. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder tends to moan a bit at high revs. Acceleration is good, but it is a bit slow to gain speed from a stop. The automatic transmission is a CVT that works very well. The Evo rally-car model performs great on the track but its stiff suspension makes it hard to live with. The cabin is furnished with drab plastics. A sporty Ralliart version is available. It is turbocharged and has AWD, but is milder than the Evo. Standard curtain air bags are a plus. A small hatchback version arrives this summer. |
