The smartest choice for a multipurpose (sport/family/etc) vehicle
by Chicago, IL on 05/25/2002.
Trim: 2001 Saab 9-3 SE 5-Door, Owned 1 year.

Pros:
Great performance and handling (particularly sharp cornering). Sport mode really moves the car out 0-60 fast (great for getting on expressway)! Front seats are extremely comfortable, almost like a glove. Love the leather. Good, flexible cargo space (although my old 9000 is much bigger). Our dealer has great, attentive service.
Cons:
Minor compared to the positive aspects of the car: A center armrest that's not an option ($85 through SAAB catalog). OnStar (which is not made or operated by SAAB) had been a nightmare (get a good GPS with a map display, like a Garmin Copilot). The back seat a bit tight (once again, the old 9000 is much roomier). Occassional squeeks and rattles, although they are very minor (probably due to the VERY rough city streets here). The factory CD player should also play MP3s and it's display not as useful as it could be. Trunk liftover slightly too much ... wish it were completly flat. The front cup holder, although useful, it poorly located blocking the radio/CD and information display.
Overall review:
This car is a winner. You buy it as a family car but can drive it like a hot-shot sport coupe. Overall production quality excellent. Winter driving, of course, is where it really shines.

Useful?
Pros:
a bit of an eccentric vehicle with very quirky characteristics, great heated seats, lots of power, love the steering torque, all around pleasure to drive. handeling is awesome in the winter with 4 snow tires. feels very safe as it feels like the car is enveloped around you inside.
Cons:
expensive service, parts and maintenance. Hard to find a mechanic to work on it. cramped engine compartment,
Overall review:
overall, it is a fun to drive car, lots of character, way les boring than it's Asian rivals, but that does come with a price, so if you can find a good mechanic, don't mind shelling out extra for parts and labor and want to drive a car that not everyone has, then go for it. I should also mention I have had mine now for 8 years, and still a fine ride.
