I love this truck!
by BigMan from Idaho on 06/29/2002.
Trim: 2001 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner Xtracab 2WD, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros:
The quality, fit, and finish are great. I love the handling and smooth performance. Availability of TRD upgrades, such as a supercharger, have enhanced the performance beyond my expectations.
Cons:
The lack of a rain gutter over the door allows rain and windshield washer solvent to drip into the vehicle when the windows are open. Drops from above land on the power window switches. I solved this delima with a Ventshade deflector.
The rubber gasket between the fender flares and the body tend to come loose, but the dealer fixed it under warranty.
Overall review:
I am a professional independant auto technician who respects Toyota Quality. I LOVE this truck! Fuel mileage has been consistently better than EPA ratings.

workhorse pickup for winter
by Ryan from WI on 01/05/2010.
Trim: 2001 Toyota Tacoma Xtracab 4WD, Owned 5 years.

Pros:
Versatile, reliable, and seems to stand punishment. It's a pickup, so it functions well as a stripped down workhorse, and I'm glad Toyota didn't get carried away with the luxury & entertainment options that are seen on newer vehicles.
The xtra cab seats are comfortable on the longer trips with normal gas stops to refresh & stretch.
Cons:
Typical Toyota rust started on door seams after 5 years, and I'll be fighting this for the next decade.
Fuel mileage certainly isn't what the older Toyota 2WD trucks with the 22-RE engine were. i can get 23mpg highway if i keep to backroads that are 55mph, but on the interstate, 19-20mpg is about it. Winter is worse for mileage as expected. City driving nets around 17mpg, unless you do small cold-start only commutes where it can drop to 13mpg.
Overall review:
It's a great workhorse truck in 4-cylinder trim. Don't expect car-like fuel economy of 30mpg. Don't expect sporty handling. Expect a long rusty life with minimal maintenance. Mine is used for hauling and camping trips in summer and as a winter all-around vehicle. Non salted-road seasons see me using more fuel efficient sports cars for typical commutes.

Pros:
looked good at first...
Cons:
truck frame rusted out in only four years...frame could not be repaired
Overall review:
Toyota would not back-up warranty on the frame rusting out. I found out later that Tocoma's have had frame rusting problems since being brought by Toyota.
