Watch out for the 50,000 mile mark! by G-Jersey Shore on 09/23/2005. Trim: 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder, Owned 4 years.
Pros: Before this week I would have agreed with everyone's opinion on the car. I loved it and had zero problems. Ran great, was fun to drive, very quick, very stylish.
Cons: Two weeks ago the catalytic converter was fried and blew all of the debris into the other Cat Converter and destroyed both including the exhaust system. $2,500 worth of parts and labor, all covered under the extended warranty I purchased when the car was bought. Two days ago the engine oil light came on and the car started pinging badly. I brought it immediately to the dealer and the entire engine was blown. Cost to replace with a new engine, $7,000. Engine was also covered under the extended warrenty I purchased.
Overall review: Watch out for the 50,000 mile mark. I hope everyone who owns the Spyder purchased the extended warranty. It would have cost me almost $10,000 out of pocket expenses to get my fairly new 2001 Spyder back up and running. Would have been a tough nut to swallow when I assumed the car, being a Toyota, would have driven for 150,000 miles with frequesnt oil changes, which I did every 3,000 miles, and scheduled maintanance. Hope your luck is better than mine. The above information that I have only owned the car for 1 year is inaccurate. I am the original owner.

MR-S: Toyota Unleashed by Greg from Mobile, AL on 04/27/2004. Trim: 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: It draws as much attention as $50,000 sports cars with significantly less price (I paid $12,900 for an 01 with less than 40,000miles). I have been signaled to roll down the windows many times to be complimented on how nice it is. One person said,
Cons: How about the Celica GTS engine instead? The pre-cats are known to get clogged and blow the engine (in some cases)!!!
Overall review: This is an awesome car with plenty of looks to go around. Handling is superb, acceleration leaves something to be desired though. The light-weight construction makes the most of the 138hp offered. For such a rigidly built car, the suspension is much more

MR2 Spyder by Spyderwoman, LA, CA on 07/01/2003. Trim: 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder, Owned 2 years.
Pros: Fun car, drives nice, good on gas, it's a Toyota
Cons: No trunk, no place to hang dry cleaning, only 1 cd player and the sound system isn't as good as it should be.
Overall review: If you are not a huge shopper (although you can get enough stuff in the car if no passenger) want a fun car that rides nice and is a convertible and beats any other car except a real sports car, then get one if you can afford it. Do your research - they manufactured a limited number of them but didn't sell quickly because of the cost so make that a negotiable point and don't pay more than what you think it's worth!
