The Ultimate Sleeper
by Bryan on 02/06/2009.
Trim: 2001 BMW 5-Series 540i 6-speed, Owned 5 years.

Pros:
Power is wonderful, and the smoothest I have ever driven, Corvette included. The power is immediate, and an endless supply of torque. The engine torque alows you to pull through almost any gear at any speed. There is almost no body roll. Then there is the driver feedback from the car that only BMW has, and Benz wishes they had. The only other car I would rather have is the E39 M5.
Cons:
I only flaw is the stinking useless cupholders. After market holders from Bavarian AutoSport takes care of that though.
Overall review:
If you drive this car,and it is properly maintained, you will buy it. It is that good. In my opinion, the second best car BMW has ever made. The first is the E39 M5. That includes the new body style and M5. I think that car is too big. This car is that good.

Beautiful Machine (that) Works
by Vince. from K-town,D on 08/17/2001.
Trim: 2001 BMW 5-Series 530i, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros:
Superb handling,sure-footed never squeals, absolutely fast driving this thing in Germany with triple-digit sustained speeds can get you a natural caffeine/adrenalin pumping going cause one stupid mistake on the German/Euro autobahn can cost your life.
Cons:
Cup holders but again like someone mentioned that's the lowest priority they have here in Europe cause driving at those speeds they want you to concentrate on your driving, not be on a boulevard cruisedriving at 65-75mph.
Overall review:
Truly an ultimate driving machine, the benchmark of all sports sedan .Highly recommend the sports-premium package if you are an enthusiast its got everything one needs. Very stable specially at high speeds just be careful with the polizei( they won't chase you just received your picture & your fine which mayinclude suspension of driving privileges).
You have to test drive the 530/540 if you have more "franklin" in your pocket.Good luck & drive safely.

2001 BMW 530i
by Dave on 08/08/2001.
Trim: 2001 BMW 5-Series 530i, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros:
This car offers the best balance of power and efficiency that I have found. 225HP, mid to upper 6 seconds to 60 MPH and 28-30 MPG @ cruising speeds of 70 to 80+ MPH. Room for four adults with a great deal of comfort. Good trunk space, excellent noise control. My vehicle has, among others, the Sport/Premium package which offers great trim level options and great suspension. Picked the car up in Munich and drove the first 1000 miles on the Autobahn. A must do for the true enthusiast. Gives the true character of the car a chance to shine.
Cons:
Dynamic Stability Control threshold too low for my taste. Tend to bump against its limits too quickly. Lack of cup holders. The fronts can't be used, and the back ones don't exist. Not realistic of BMW to expect Americans to not ever have a Coke can or a kid with a drink in the car.
Overall review:
Love it. Best overall package of quality, fit/finish, equipment level, power, and economy on the market.

Reliable
by bimmerseattle on 02/05/2013.
Trim: 2001 BMW 5-Series 525i, Owned 3 years.
Useful?
Pros:
Almost everything. It is a reliability machine. I own the car about 3 years now, it was 100k when I bought it and now 133k. I had two surprises only. Radiator leaked around 110k, which was an easy DIY cost around $400 total. The other one was the alternator. I was suspecting that it is going to fail yet I postponed it. During a road trip, it stopped working. Cost $500 to get it replaced along with few belts and stuff.
Cons:
cupholders
Overall review:
It has a timeless design and quality. New Mercedes E class doesn't have the interior quality as good as this car.
