Great Family Vehicle, If you can find a good one! by Brian from Harvey, Il on 03/07/2012. Trim: 2001 Ford Windstar LX, Owned 8 years.
Pros: If you need a people carrier, this minivan will get the job done. If you can keep your speed below 70mph, you will see 500+ miles between fill-ups...but you should, this van has a 26 gallon tank...200 Horse engine, great sound system,
Cons: Ford had a recall due to rusted vans having issues when rear ended...they put a brace on the rear axle that causes vibration between 65-75 mph. Still working with them to resolve this issue...tie rods and ball joints seem to need replacing even few years as well. I also had a transaxle oil seal leak and intake manifold gasket leak, which seem to happen semi frequently with these vehicles. Like other owners have also stated, DIY'ers will not get to do too much with this van, even for spark plug changes the wipers have to be removed along with multiple plastic trim pieces.
Overall review: The Freestar has fold-flat middle and rear seating which is nicer than the wrestling of 85 pounds seats in the WIndstar, but the Windstar's other options and slightly higher horsepower was a better selection for me and my family...make sure a decent warranty is available, it will be needed at sometime.

Family Mobile by Jeff from Wisconsin on 12/16/2001. Trim: 2001 Ford Windstar SE, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Comfortable, relatively quiet, easy to drive. The video system is great for trips with the kids.
Cons: It would be great if the third seat folded into the floor like the Honda. The third seat slides forward, but exposes greasy tracks. Be careful, the exterior sheet metal is thin and will dent easily.
Overall review: 4500 miles and the only problem we have had was a leaky sliding door. It took two visits to the dealer to get corrected. No other problems to report since second visit ("knock on wood").

expected more by Many years Ford customer on 08/13/2001. Trim: 2001 Ford Windstar Limited, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Very good looking vehicle, roomy
Cons: a bit pricey, had to go 3 times to service for a "tin can" noise on front disk brakes, Had to change parts. (Under warranty). Excellent service from dealer. I had a 1995 Windstar which I feel had a better quality against rattles and noises. Very truck like on rough roads but extremely smooth on good roads How come they don't advertise (sell) new Windstars in major auto shows in some south regions of the USA? and so much publicity up North...........
Overall review: I expected a much better overall value than my '95 Windstar, I feel that quality has suffered over the years.Leather bottom seats tend to curl.
