Avoid at all
by Ali New Jersey on 12/12/2011.
Trim: 2001 Volkswagen Passat GLS, Owned 2 years.

Pros:
I like its appearance and how it looks.
Cons:
I bought when it is 110,000 miles and I ve used it untill 136,000 I used it for 2 years and in every 2 months I have to repair something. ABS light is constantly going on. Radio stopped working. I have to replace every coil on the engine still engine light is up. Tire rods are started to break . Mufflers were broken and I had to fix.
Overall review:
Avoid these types of car at all unless you are rich and have to time to fix and pay for the costs.

Buy something else.

Pros:
It gets up and goes when you put your foot into it.
Cons:
Build quality is terrible!!! Going down the freeway and the right front turn signal assembly flies off. Windshield leaks. Headliner is falling down. Engine leaks oil, repaired once under warranty and a second time when I had the timing belt changed, still leaks. ABS module went out. Alternator went out and dealership squeezed a new battery along with the alternator out of the repair job. Tie-rod ends are wearing out at 75k. Safety catch on the hood broke, had to jerry-rig my own once I managed to get it open. Lots of other stuff if I think about it but that's bad for my blood pressure
Overall review:
VW should be ashamed of themselves for selling this car to the driving public

fix your own VW Passat

Pros:
Great handling/braking/accel for a 4-door sedan. Comforable seats with lots of leg room in front and back. Fairly simple to work on mechanically. Solid parts...chassis/ steering control arms/ disc brakes. Nice stock stereo. Also, very nice simple looks...it will age well.
Cons:
Some plastic stuff through-out front panel. No aftermarket parts to speak of...and a few special tools needed for some repairs. ABS brake system not working...I believe that it requires a new unit...not a home job.
Overall review:
I got this car first because it gives room for repairs...the front bumper comes off into a service position. The car is acually pretty simple. I repaired both front axles with brand new ones for $100 each, and it took an hour for each, because I am slow. I have changed the timing belt (less than $90), except for the cam holding wrench for $130. I destroyed my oil pan, had it welded for $40. Can get a new one from VW for under $150, and I fixed it parked on the side of the street...no lift needed.
So, if you are willing to try...you can fix most of the repairs/maintainence yourself. Sparkplugs are easy enough to get to...air filter is simple, and the oil change couldn't get any more simple than this car. Just plug in the On-Board diagnostic computer, under the steering wheel, and it tells you the problem.

Great Car!!
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 09/30/2008.

Pros:
Handling, braking, and comfort is excellent!
Cons:
The one thing that I would change about this car is increased horsepower. The 150bhp is not quite suffiecient for the weight of this car.
Overall review:
Much value for the cost.
