Relaxing luxury and inspiring performance. by Audifan in Colorado on 11/26/2008. Trim: 2001 Audi A6 4.2, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Superb comfort, build quality and features. From long journeys to the daily commute, the A6 doesn't disappoint. It truly is a pleasure to drive in all respects. While it certainly is a car that's more biased toward luxury than sportiness, its handling never fails to impress me. It's incredibly chuckable for being such a luxo-boat. The fit and finish is absolutely first-rate and it has been superbly reliable. The V8 has plenty of power, even at high altitude and Quattro is utterly unstoppable in foul weather. I've owned MANY euro-boxes and this one is far and away the best. Gas mileage is quite reasonable for a 300hp V8: 23mpg average. Buy the best example you can find and enjoy it.
Cons: Dealer support is very, and needlessly, expensive. Maintenance MUST be done religiously. However, if you're inclined to do the maintenance yourself, there are VERY good manuals and on-line resources at your disposal. Also, cables and computer programs are available that allow you to connect it to a PC (or a Mac running Windows) and do ALL of the electronic diagnostics that the dealer can do.
Overall review: This is a superb car to own and live with on a daily basis. The aesthetics, while conservative, are understated and elegant. The V8 is utterly bulletproof and allows effortless cruising. Compare the A6 to the BMW 5-Series and the Mercedes E-Class. The A6 uses better-quality materials than either of them, and neither BMW's nor Mercedes' AWD systems are as sophisticated or effective. The BMW's handling is more crisp than the A6's, but, the A6 is larger and does have more room. The Mercedes isn't anywhere NEAR as well-built and carries a serious snob stigma. Mine, with 81,000 mi had 4 very minor failures: gas cap, fuel check valve, door latch micro switch, and an oxygen sensor. The A6 is backed by a VERY good supply chain of reasonably-priced parts and DIY guides and manuals for those that are inclined to do their own servicing. Generally, avoid dealers for service (however, sometimes they do have the lowest prices for parts) and find a good, trustworthy independent mechanic.

Giddy up!!! by A CarPoint Consumer on 06/04/2002. Trim: 2001 Audi A6 2.7 T, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Giddy up and go!! Bi-turbo acceleration is very quick* and this car will make you blush with excitement if you stay in the 250hp, rpm range. Handling with ESP and Quattro is controlled and responsive even without the sports package. Quiet ride (except when racing to 60 mph - then it has a great exhaust note). Trunk is massive and with fold down seats there is nothing that won't fit. Heated seats, Bose stereo, xenon head-lamps, auto-controlled windows and sun-roof, and all wheel drive for less $$ than the less powerful BMW 530i.
Cons: *Automatic/Triptronic transmission is great but I wish it would rev out in first gear instead of prematurely shifting to second gear at 5 mph. Ashtray (who needs this anymore?) rattles sometimes. Gas mileage is about 18 mpg and at $1.70/gal for premium it is a guzzler.
Overall review: Great Car! I drove both the BMW 530i and the Audi A6, 2.7T before I decided to go with the Audi. I couldn't justify getting less performance for more money just to have the blue and white propeller on my car. If you’re in the market for a $45k automobile drive both these cars and see for yourself. Maybe in 2003 BMW will put the all wheel drive (x) in the 5 series and it will be more adequate to compare it to the A6 Quattro.
