Pros:
Great acceleration and control. With snow tires, I was able to go up & down snowy hills up here in Canada! Love the 4x4 factor. Interior is very comfortable and luxurious. Great for long road trips. It also gets a lot of looks.
Cons:
Very expensive to repair after 150,000kms! Window regulator & actuators went out twice. Had to replace the entire cooling system & cylinder head due to a loose hose. Coolant Expansion Tank blew twice (cooling system is made out of plastic). Lots of problems with the sensors. Wipers in the rear broke off. Internal parts (esp window controls) are all falling off. Uses up A LOT of gas. It was in the repair shop every other week! I switched back to Lexus and I couldn't be happier. German Engineering is a thing of the past.
Overall review:
Great vehicle when there are no problems, but it always has problems!!

Pros:
Excellent quality as fair as the engine, tranny, looks. I have the light wood and tan leather heated seats with navigation system. After 7 years it still looks sporty and up to date. I like this body style better than the new 07-08 because it I think it looks more aggressive. The new one looks more like a grocery getter, or more for a woman (no offense women).
Cons:
The little things like: Door regulator problem, lock actuator gets stuck or something sometime, the side molding between the front and rear door looks like water spots that wont come of. I have a black truck so it's more noticeable, and also the molding on the inside door handles seem as though the paint is coming off, seam of leather coming out of the door ( which is an easy fix)

My advise: go to forums and check out how to fix little things, & invest in an extended warranty/local good mechanic. There is so much upgradable things you can do to the truck after market wise, and even a permanent fix for the poorly designed window regulator. The best truck I have ever owned. This truck has so much get up and go I want to just drive it all the time, but I drive the 325 for gas milage and wifey drives the truck cause I bought it for her and the kids:-) Lastly the main reason I bought it was because it's one of the safest trucks out there and it was an ultmate driving machine & not an ultimate gadget machine. I purchased it with 70,XXX miles and for about $22,XXX.

2001 BMW X5 highs and lows
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 01/13/2008.

Pros:
Great body style
Heavy duty and designed to drive fast on the autobohn
Cons:
Electircal problems
I had to replace many things I would never replace on a Japanese car from window regulators to door lock actuators to MAS air flow sensor.
Battery under the spare tire.
Cheap plastic parts under the hood.
I'm afraid to lower a window due to bad window regulators.
Door actuator will not unlock.
Overall review:
Nice SAV but it could be the best if BMW could learn from the Japanese about electrical issues and reliability.
