"Update of my 2004 review"
by Ed from Danvers, MA on 08/17/2010.
Trim: 2001 Mazda Tribute ES 4WD, Owned 6 years.

Pros:
This is a 2010 update from my 9/21/04 review. The Tribute handles well and is quick with the 24v V6. The leather interior is very nice and I have gotten acceptable MPG (22 overall probably) over the years. I've liked this car a lot and bought a new '06 for home use (the 01 is my "Florida car")
Cons:
Transmission (ouch) went at 70 K, both driver and passenger door handles went and had to be replaced (common in '01s), now the ABS is acting up (sensor?). I have 83K on it now and I will trade it soon.
Overall review:
Good car, I have enjoyed it and it has done everything I've needed. If it weren't for the transmission failure, I'd be glowing about it.

A great vehicle.

Pros:
I have well over 217,000 miles on my 2001 V6 Mazda Tribute, and have no reservations about spontaneously making 1000 mile drives in it. I (knock on wood) have not needed to make any major repairs. I am pleased that Mazda has chosen to stick with the "tried and true" timing chain versus a timing belt. The few parts that I have needed to replace (mostly wear items such as brake components) are generally reasonably priced. The only expensive repair (around $400.00) I've made to the vehicle was the result of a non-Mazda mechanic erroneously replacing parts that were not malfunctioning. The actual repair, had it been done properly, would have cost only around $60.00.
Cons:
The owners' manual doesn't provide clear enough instruction on replacement of the headlights. Although this turned out to be an extremely simple procedure, the steps are not obvious upon inspection (I'm a military trained mechanic). I had to search the internet for instruction for rear of damaging the connector. Additionally, the engine seems to reach excessively high rpm's when the transmission downshifts on hills, or when the cruise control's resume feature is activated. An unfamiliar driver might wonder if the engine is being overtaxed, or might become damaged by this.
Overall review:
I rely heavily on my vehicles, and I am very pleased with this one. I've recently gone back to school, so I need to get another 5 years out of this one, which I'm confident I'll be able to do.

Nice truck, Very expensive to repair

Pros:
The Mazda Tribute handles very well. Good gas milage, looks nice
Cons:
I have had chronic repair issues with my Tribute! I have taken very good care of my tribute but the costs keep adding up! In the last 2 years I have had the engine literally blow up at 98000 miles. Mazda still does not know what caused it. Their answer was "These things just happen." The radiator went out, the rear pinion seal went, the interior door handles have broken on my driver door twice (at 100 dollars each) The electrical system went out, I hit a bump and all the interior lights on the dash went out and the windows stopped working. Maybe the more recent tribute models are better but the 2001 sure is a headach!!!!
Overall review:
I would not recomend picking up a 2001 tribute
