Great all- around car for most people. by Bill in Seattle on 06/03/2009. Trim: 2001 Subaru Forester S, Owned 9 years.
2
Pros: Compact size. Able to haul short to long items such as 8' boards with the seats reclined. Reliability. I brought this car in April 2000 and the only thing I have had to replaced in all these years is the battery. I had to replace items such as tires, winshield wiper blades, but that is all. Normal maintenance every 30 thousand miles at the Subaru dealer and thats it. Drives great on the highway.
Cons: The ride doesn't feel solid like the Outback. The hatchback closes with a clink instead of a solid sound. The gas mileage , 20 in town, 26 on the highway could be better. The air conditioner is only barely adequate.
Overall review: Well worth the money if you want to keep a car for 10 years.

I hate my Subaru by Wish I bought a Toyota from Philly on 06/03/2006. Trim: 2001 Subaru Forester S, Owned 5 years.
2
Pros: It feels safe to drive in any weather, gets decent gas mileage and is reasonably comfortable.
Cons: The car has serious brake issues and and reliability problems when driven aggressively or in the city. Front pads are good for 20k or less (more like 17k) Engine management sensors break constantly -5 replacements so far. Repairs are very costly- things that shouldn't break at 50k miles do, like cv joint boots. Every other vehicle I've owned, the cv boots were good for 80-90k or more. I hate this car and can't wait to give it to my kid when he gets a license.
Overall review: These cars are great for 2 or 3 years, while they are still under warranty. After that, be prepared for an expensive ride. It's not just mine- there are others in the family and they hate the expensive repairs and maintenance also. I purchased this vehicle based on its reputation for bulletproof reliability, and am sorely disappointed. TIP- lease for three years and GIVE IT BACK BEFORE IT BREAKS !!

uncompromised versatility by apanthropy - phoenix on 01/31/2006. Trim: 2001 Subaru Forester L, Owned 2 years.
2
Pros: This is a "do anything" vehicle. Although it's a "jack of all trades" it's more than just mediocre at everything. Not a ferrari, but handling and power are still not just good - they're great. Not a Suburban, but interior room is not just enough -it's plenty. This vehicle does everything and does it bettern than you would expect from a little import station wagon, and better than most other vehicles in any class. After 100,000 miles of utilitarian usage there are no rattles, no squeaks, and the vehicle runs, drives and polishes up like a brand new car - inside and out.
Cons: There is nothing about this vehicle I can fairly discredit. Repairs after a collision were costly, but that's typical of any car today. I wish cars had steel bumpers still..
Overall review: I've owned a 2001 subaru forester L for about 2 years now and continue to enjoy everything about it. Not a "Babe Magnet" of course, it looks like any little station wagon - but it's pure utility. The true luxury of this vehicle is in never having to say "i can't". Going skiing? all wheel drive and high clearance, and a standard equipment roof rack make that easy. Moving? almost everything fits, even furniture on the roof. Lunch bus for the office? 4 "real sized" adults fit OK, 5 in a pinch. Fun picnic in the mountains? ample power and impeccable handling will make those mountain roads a kick in the pants! It's handsome enough you can park it in front of a mansion and not look silly, but modest enough you can park by a double-wide and not look like a meth dealer. Little touches throughout make this vehicle truly useful - there are a million storage compartments! Even a real full size spare tire! Truly an ace of all trades.

Pros: Great Handling and Acceleration. Safe and fun. AWD is perfect. I have had the vehicle for over 1 year and nothing has gone wrong.
Cons: Interior is great if your sitting in the front. A little tight in the back.
Overall review: I would recommend this vehicle to anyone. Good on gas, AWD, fun, safe. Almost the perfect vehicle.
