Great all- around car for most people.
by Bill in Seattle on 06/03/2009.
Trim: 2001 Subaru Forester S, Owned 9 years.
2
Pros:
Compact size. Able to haul short to long items such as 8' boards with the seats reclined.
Reliability. I brought this car in April 2000 and the only thing I have had to replaced in all these years is the battery. I had to replace items such as tires, winshield wiper blades, but that is all.
Normal maintenance every 30 thousand miles at the Subaru dealer and thats it.
Drives great on the highway.
Cons:
The ride doesn't feel solid like the Outback. The hatchback closes with a clink instead of a solid sound. The gas mileage , 20 in town, 26 on the highway could be better. The air conditioner is only barely adequate.
Overall review:
Well worth the money if you want to keep a car for 10 years.

I hate my Subaru
by Wish I bought a Toyota from Philly on 06/03/2006.
Trim: 2001 Subaru Forester S, Owned 5 years.
2
Pros:
It feels safe to drive in any weather, gets decent gas mileage and is reasonably comfortable.
Cons:
The car has serious brake issues and and reliability problems when driven aggressively or in the city. Front pads are good for 20k or less (more like 17k) Engine management sensors break constantly -5 replacements so far. Repairs are very costly- things that shouldn't break at 50k miles do, like cv joint boots. Every other vehicle I've owned, the cv boots were good for 80-90k or more. I hate this car and can't wait to give it to my kid when he gets a license.
Overall review:
These cars are great for 2 or 3 years, while they are still under warranty. After that, be prepared for an expensive ride. It's not just mine- there are others in the family and they hate the expensive repairs and maintenance also. I purchased this vehicle based on its reputation for bulletproof reliability, and am sorely disappointed. TIP- lease for three years and GIVE IT BACK BEFORE IT BREAKS !!

Pros:
Great Handling and Acceleration. Safe and fun. AWD is perfect. I have had the vehicle for over 1 year and nothing has gone wrong.
Cons:
Interior is great if your sitting in the front. A little tight in the back.
Overall review:
I would recommend this vehicle to anyone. Good on gas, AWD, fun, safe. Almost the perfect vehicle.

THE COMPLETE MINI SUV
by JAMES on 06/22/2002.
Trim: 2001 Subaru Forester L, Owned 1 year.

Pros:
EVERYTHING WORKS THE WAY THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO.ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION ARE SMOOTH.AMAZINGLY SMOOTH AND COMFORTABLE ON THE ROAD.FUN TO DRIVE.COMFORTABLE FRONT SEATS,GREAT ON LONG TRIPS.NO BACK ACHES.VERY SECURE IN BAD WEATHER,VERY GOOD BRAKES AND ALL WHEEL DRIVE TRACTION.YOU FEEL IN CONTROL AT ALL TIMES.GOOD QUALITY MATERIALS INSIDE AND OUT.FEELS GOOD.
Cons:
MANY PEOPLE HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT THE CUP HOLDERS UP FRONT.THEY ARE ACTUALLY AT A VERY GOOD HEIGHT AND POSITION FOR REACHING WITH OUT TAKING YOUR EYES OFF THE ROAD. YOU CAN REACH THE A.C. FAN CONTRLOL OK BUT OTHERS ARE OBSTRUCTED. YOU LEARN TO REACH AROUND THE CUPS. LEG ROOM IN THE REAR HAS BEEN COMPLAINED ABOUT BUT THATS BEACAUSE THE SEATS TRAVEL BACK FURTHER THAN MOST.MORE FRONT LEGROOM FOR TALL DRIVERS LIKE ME.YOU CAN MOVE THE SEAT UP FOR MORE REAR LEG ROOM AND STILL BE COMFORTABLE IN FRONT.
Overall review:
I DID ALOT OF REASEARCH BEFORE DECIDING ON THE FORESTER. I TEST DROVE ALL OF THE COMPETITION.I PREFER A REAR HATCH.I DON'T LIKE REAR DOORS THAT OPEN THE WRONG WAY FOR MY COUNTRY.I DON'T LIKE THE SPARE TIRE HANGING ON REAR. I PREFER IT OUT OF SIGHT.I LIKE 4 WHEEL ABS STANDARD.I LIKE ALL WHEEL DRIVE. NO SWITCHING TO 4 WHEEL DRIVE AFTER YOU DISCOVER YOUR IN TROUBLE ON ICE OR WET OR SNOW.IT'S ON ALL THE TIME.ALSO MOST OF THE VEHICLES ON THE ROAD IN THE SMALL UTE CLASS ARE 2 WHEEL DRIVE ANYWAY.THE 4 WHEEL DRIVE OPTION IS TOO EXPENSIVE AND WHERE I LIVE YOU CAN'T FIND ONE ANYWAY.I WAS REAL CLOSE TO PURCHASING A TRIBIUTE BUT THE DEALER WOULD'NT MAKE A DEAL.THE SUBARU DEALER GAVE ME A GOOD DISCOUNT AND THEY WERE GOOD TO WORK WITH.THAT WAS BEFORE I DISCOVERED THE SUBARU.I'M GLAD I WAITED.
