If you have a well equipped toolbox and a garage, this may be a car for you by Ulf, Sweden. on 05/06/2012. Trim: 2000 Mercedes-Benz CL500, Owned 6 years.
Pros: It is the very definition of luxury. When everything works that is... And it is one of the most elegantly designed vehicles in the world. In my opinion, it outperforms the successor, the C/W 216.
Cons: ...And it does not always work.... If you are low on money, and is looking for an inexpenceive CL you need to make sure (!) that the previous owner maintained it. One example: Mercedes does not specify that the ABC oil needs to be replaced, but it does. It rottens and becomes grayish with a consistence that more resembles water. The ABC-system also has a pulsation dampener which needs to be replaced after some 160,000 miles or so. As always - look for the post face-lift cars (2003+) They have a better navigation system and some other improvements.
Overall review: If you are comfortable with learning how to maintain the car and have a decent set of tools and knows how to use the internet, there is a lot of information from other enthusiasts on the possible problems that can arise. The most expenceive one being the ABC-system (Active Body Control) and its care. If you dare to open the bonnet or take apart the interior in search of a problem, this may be an inexpeceive luxury car to own and drive. If you dont - then stay away! There is more or less a l w a y s some little thing that needs to be fixed. But when everything works, it is a wonderful car to drive.

Which end of the spectrum do you want?? by Califrornia driver on 12/27/2001. Trim: 2000 Mercedes-Benz CL500, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Exclusivity, elegant styling
Cons: Poor reliability for a vehicle of this price-- electronics, mainly-- from turn signals to power windows to CD changer to front seat power glide sensors-- pretty much, you name it. Also the car has excessive wind noise from its mirrors and the passenger door needed to be remounted because it rubbed on the front quarter panel. The COMAND system is of limited use in many areas of the country-- unlike Lexus and BMW, for example, MB's most recent data disc still has the entire central part of California, including our metro area of 700,000+, mapped in only the crudest manner.
Overall review: Maybe my probem is that I previously owned a beige Toyota Camry--I have gone from complete reliability and no prestige, to somewhere closer to the opposite end of the spectrum. If you ask me which is better, it depends if I am driving along the California coast in my newly waxed CL class, or driving an Enterprise Cavalier because the CL's steering rack leaks and needs to be replaced (this week's event...)

THe luxury sporty car by Henry tran on 10/23/2001. Trim: 2000 Mercedes-Benz CL500, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Fast, good handling, sound system is great
Cons: I owned both the S.500& CL500 and i am very dissappointed with the air conditioning especially if you live in TX, during summer time, the car cannot get cool as fast as other car even the cheap one like Toyota Camry
Overall review: It' ok to buy if you don't live in TX
