Excellent value: Quality car worth the money.
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 01/24/2009.
Trim: 2000 Mazda Protege ES, Owned 4 years.

Pros:
Price, quality and reliability, clean interior, good driving visibility, power windows and mirrors, nice sunroof, sufficient trunk, good handling. Sufficient power for needed acceleration. Good paint. Sunroof works well and does not leak. Nice, clean gages. Accurate fuel indicator and car health (check engine) monitor system. I like the way it looks, straight lines, sporty.
Cons:
Gas mileage could be better for 1.6L manual. Somewhat noisy on the highway, tires you out on long trips. Suspension is a bit bumpy; it is more of sports suspension setup.
Overall review:
This is good car for local commuting. Pretty good mileage. Reliable. Clean. Comfortable. Inexpensive and good retail value.

Still Has It's Zoom-Zoom-Zoom
by Rose from Maryland on 03/16/2005.
Trim: 2000 Mazda Protege ES, Owned 6 years.

Pros:
Small yet spacious car. Good on gas and has some "zoom-zoom-zoom" about it. Very reliable. Plus, it is not listed on the "Top Stolen Vehicles" list (like the Civic is).
Cons:
The transmission went out the first 6 months. Afterwards, it was fine.
Overall review:
Great car for young single people (like myself) or a young starting family.

This one's a keeper!
by Cate on 02/17/2013.
Trim: 2000 Mazda Protege LX, Owned more than 10 years.
Useful?
Pros:
I have this car since 2000. Never had any major problem at all.Only work done on my car is maintenance, such as change oil, tire rotation, etc. Nothing beyond maintenance. I was probably one of the lucky owners who never had any issue with this car. The color never seems to fade at all. Still the same glossy silver color. No chip or anything.
Cons:
It makes a screeching metal noise during winter when I start the car, or cold season. I brought it two dealers including Mazda shop and they never seem to find anything wrong. When you leave out in the cold (outdoor), it makes that sound at the beginning for about 10 seconds or 20 at most. It disappears afterwards. When it is garaged (indoor), it doesn't do that sound at all.
Overall review:
I love my Mazda! Very fuel economy, low maintenance, easy handling, never any issue or worry on me!

I love my Mazda Protege!
by Older and Wiser, New York City on 03/24/2012.
Trim: 2000 Mazda Protege ES, Owned more than 10 years.
Useful?
Pros:
The mileage, the endurance over more than 11 years (with regular check-ups of course), and the looks.
Cons:
The trunk space is minimal. Folding down the backseat doesn't really give you much more room to transport stuff.
Overall review:
I use my car to drive to the country 2 or 3 times a month and it has served me very well. I DO get it checked and serviced regularly, and my mechanic thinks it is a good car, too. However, if I want to lug lumber or other big things from Lowe's, e.g., I have to rent a van or some such thing because this little gem has not enough room. This was NOT the case with my previous 2 cars: Plymouth Horizons, because they were hatchbacks.
But my cat thinks the CAR IS JUST PURRFECT!

Great with few problems
by Jason fom MA on 01/06/2009.
Trim: 2000 Mazda Protege LX, Owned 2 years.
Useful?
Pros:
Safe, good handling, runs well for a long time
Cons:
Belts don't fully fit car, volume is weird on the stereo
Overall review:
I just got into an accident with this car. I was going about 45 while someone cut out on me. Its extremely safe for how much damage was done to my car. It ran like a beauty and only problem was squealing with a belt that would not fit the car. Overall, it was a great car and I am hoping that its frame is not bent.
