Dodge Van Problem?
by Jim on 07/22/2002.
Trim: 1998 Dodge Ram Wagon B2500, Owned 4 years.
1
Pros:
Nice looking - space
Cons:
very disappointed when transmission went out @ 53000 miles. $2300 for a factory rebuilt. I expected 100 to 200 thousand trouble free engine, transmission service. Dodge has made these long enough that this shouldn't happen. There was no abuse and the oil had been changed twice in that period.
Overall review:
The early transmission failure translates to a low overall rating for the van. My replacement cost was 10% of the total cost. Until Dodge improves the quality or warranty I won't buy another.

If BIGGER is better...
by FunGuy from Colorado on 05/28/2001.
Trim: 1998 Dodge Ram Wagon B3500 Maxi, Owned 1 year.

Pros:
Gets a respectable 16 mpg for such a monster with the 5.9 engine. Hauls my trailer up to the Rocky Mtns with gusto. We (four of us) use it for overnights and sleep in it by removing all but one back seat. Seats are fairly comfortable. Rear AC/Heat is a nice to have.
Cons:
The handling is horrible. It is a handful with a cross wind or when trucks pass at high speed. This makes it WORK to drive on long trips. I would LOVE a 5 speed auto instead of the 4 speed.
Overall review:
I like this "car". If you need to move a big family or you like to take long trips and aren't adverse to sleeping in your car, here it is! It is fun pulling up next to Chevy Suburbans, rolling down the window and saying; "What a cute little car. Does it come in a full size model?"
