Good Drivetrain, but not much else! by SeanMan in Ontario on 09/12/2008. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z34, Owned 2 years.
Pros: Car has nice styling, powerful acceleration, great gas mileage, and a sporty feel to it. Reliable drive train.
Cons: The interior parts are cheaply made, especially those made of plastic. Most on my car are broken. The electrics on this car are what will burn you as it gets older. Lights, signals, wipers, trunk release, windows. They all begin to act up as the car gets up there in age and the repairs are pricey. (Mine is at 280,000km right now.) Engine and tranny can get leaky and must be fixed. Spark plugs are very pricey to replace because of the labor. (They're hard to get at!). Replacing the battery is an all-day affair due to its asinine positioning under the washer fluid tank! My gas tank rotted out and had to be replaced at 275K.
Overall review: GM got the drivetrain right, but not much else on this car. There are more reliable used car values out there.

Great car, no major problems. by Old man from Lorain, Ohio on 12/01/2003. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Excellent gas milage, almost 30mpg. When I first got the car @ 44000 miles, it did not handle the snow very well, but a new set of tires fixed that problem. Handling is great now. (just hit 91000 miles).
Cons: Has a lot of squeaks when you hit a bump. Sounds like and old pickup truck. No one can tell me exactly where the squeaks are coming from, just being told to replace the shocks and struts, but the car handles just great. It has an oil leak, the intake manifold gasket is leaking, $400 to repair. Clogged fuel filter caused stallling during hot weather.
Overall review: Great car, no major problems yet.

THIS is a Monte Carlo? by Rex, Sonoran Desert on 08/05/2005. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS, Owned 5 years.
Pros: Purchased in 2000 from a Chevy Dealer. Liked the color, Red. No, not a Jr fan either! liked it at first.
Cons: The 3100 V6 is junk, the car is way underpowered, my '88 Lebaron 2.2 T1 convertible runs circles around it. can not understand why it does not have 4-wheel disc brakes, not that it would help, VERY poor braking. Handles like a recliner chair in corners at legal frwy speeds. Car will not go 100 mph as control cuts in at 95mph. I live in a remote desert area and speed matters. Leaks coolant, has noise similair to bad shocks, suspension components all replaced, still there. Paint clear coat is history. Interior appearance, CHEAP!Chevrolet scewed up IMO. They shoulda put Chevrolet out of its misery and kept Oldsmobile.
Overall review: Junk, would not recommend.

There's a reason NASCAR uses this by An MSN Autos Consumer on 02/27/2004. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z34, Owned 3 years.
Pros: Great acceleration, good gas mileage for a 3.8L V6, easy to drive, and the radio buttons on the steering wheel are awesome. Plus I love the overall look.
Cons: Hard to see out of the back while driving. The blind spots between the back window and the second window are far too big. You have to rely on your side-mirrors. And the backseat is really hard to get into.
Overall review: My favorite car so far. The turn signal switch went out, which apparently is a common problem with this model. But haven't had to spend too much on repairs overall.
