THE WORST PIECE OF CRAP EVER MADE by Tweety in Beverly, Masschusetts on 06/16/2003. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Malibu Base, Owned 3 years.
Pros: The pick-up that the car has when accelarating. It has a nice comfortable interior
Cons: The brake system, the air conditioner, wheel bearing, JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT WAS NOT MENTIONED ABOVE!
Overall review: I have had this car for 2 years! In the past 9 months I have put over $3,000 in this car. At first it was the brakes ($250), then it was the water pump($225), the intake gasket and the cam censor ($1800), wheel bearing - both front ones ($600), now the brakes are squeaking again...now it is going to cost about $500 because both front and rear brakes are completely GONE! The car needs new tires after one year of getting brand new tires. The airconditioner/heat only works on the 3-5 settings. The ABS light comes on and off. The check engine light seems to always be on! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS CAR TO ANYONE! If I could get rid of it I would....but I still owe $8000 on it! Which is pathetic because it isn't even worth that much!!!! My only wish is that someone hits me so hard that the car gets totalled.....as long as I am safe who cares about the F*&^ING car.

Ow, that might leave a mark! by Slim Shadetree mechanic comes clean on 12/28/2002. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Malibu Base, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Roomy vehicle for a small car. Plenty of power with a full load of kids.
Cons: ABS sensor fault light comes on time to time. I unhooked cable from hub assembly and cable housing was full of water, dont let your garage put in new sensor if its not needed. I also replaced EGR sensor myself $100 for the part and finished in 15 minutes. Advance Auto has lifetime brakepads for $20 that only take a half hour to replace, you'll need several pairs with this car. Intake manifold gasket started leaking, antifreeze level dropped slowly and put Barrs leakstop in coolant and has fixed that problem so far.
Overall review: This car has needed another year or two of road testing to fix all the quirks in this model. Decent car but upgrade to a newer model year if at all possible unless granny leaves this one in your driveway.

Marriage Wrecker by A MSN Autos Consumer on 11/14/2002. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Malibu Base, Owned 4 years.
Pros: Styling, plenty of room in engine compartment for repairs, seats are comfy.
Cons: Too many things are going bad on this car that I've never had go bad on other cars -- brakes always being replaced and still vibrate badly and warp fast, bad radio reception, coolant leak from bad intake manifold gasket, falling off mirrors, windows coming off track, blower settings 1 and 2 don't work, A/C dies each summer, engine ticks, rough starting in morning, water in headlights and taillights. Just too much repair work.
Overall review: The worst car I've ever owned. And I've owned other Chevys -- but this is really bad. How Chevy could reduce quality instead of improve is beyond me. If you value your marriage, your job, your life, DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!

Tireless Malibu by Red rider on 04/03/2002. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS, Owned 4 years.
Pros: Road handling
Cons: Abnormal tire wear and engine noise
Overall review: A good overall car, but with brake and tire problems. Every Malibu owner I have met has had a problem with the tires supplied having abnormal and rapid tire center rib wear.

Great car, will buy the next model when the time comes. by RG from PA. on 12/19/2010. Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Malibu LS, Owned 9 years.
Pros: Gas Mileage, Spacious and very dependable.
Cons: Air Conditioner only works on high level numbers.
Overall review: I bought this car used with less than 25k miles and have never had to replace anything major as of yet, except for normal wear & tear items. It now has close to 100k miles.
