Excellent SUV
by TahoeLover in STL MO on 08/17/2009.
Trim: 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe 4-Door 4WD, Owned 3 years.

Pros:
Plenty of room front and back. I'm 6' tall and, while driving, I can strech my left leg all the way out and lock my knee if i want. Sitting in the back seat may not be as comfortable, but is still comfortable enough to not to get cramps in your legs when sitting for several hours. Plenty enough room for storage in the rear. One reviewer said he fit a queen size mattress in the back, I believe it (folded seats down of course). Great traction and handling in off-road situations and during inclimate weather.
Cons:
Not really much to complain about... 160K miles and only major repairs were a water pump and a fuel pump. Estimated gas mileage was 12-16 mpg when these trucks were new, I'm still getting 12 mpg in the city and 15 mpg on the highway, and I have a heavy foot.
Overall review:
1998 was the first year for the Auto 4wd, so you could drive it in 2wd, Auto 4wd (which is like 2wd, but when the rear tires start slipping it kicks the 4wd in automatically), 4wd Hi, or 4wd Lo. IT's the last of the REAL SUV's, seems like any newer and instead of having a tail-gate you'd have a hatchback. It's the SUV that was meant for some off-road use, before they started making them for use as an over-sized mini-van by soccer moms that never use the 4wd and even if they did use the 4wd only used it in snow.

Tahoe

Pros:
The Tahoe is a strong, capable SUV. It has plenty of towing power, and is fantastic in the snow and off road. The styling is nothing special, but through the years, this model Tahoe still looks nice, even among newer vehicles. The interior is extremely comfortable with some of the best automotive seats I've ever sat in, and ergonomically effective controls for front and back. (Rear AC.) The turning radius is simply astonishing for this size of a vehicle, it never ceased to impress me whenever parking the Tahoe. I would rather parallel park the Tahoe than nearly every smaller car I've driven.
Cons:
This is a big, powerful V8 engine, and along with that comes rather poor gas mileage. Fuel economy always remained competitive with similar vehicles but began to noticeably decline as the vehicle aged. In 125k miles, the Tahoe had only a few minor problems, all of which were electrical minus needing a new steering column at 115k miles. The rear seats can be a hassle to fold down and put back up, but nearly all 1990s SUVs had similar systems.
Overall review:
The Tahoe has been a great, reliable vehicle over nearly 10 years of ownership. It performed extremely well in towing, commuting, vacationing, snow, and off road adventures. The interior is extremely well put together, and the Tahoe is simply the easiest large SUV to drive and park around town. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone who can find a good used model and can afford to fill the gigantic tank.

Truck for the ages

The stance of this vehicle is what sets it apart form the rest. The 31
Cons:
Gas mileage could be better. I average 17-20 MPG ( combined city and highway). Of course improved gas mileage would decrease performance and acceleration. Brake system is undersized, vehicle weighs over 6,000 pounds and front brakes wear out approximately every 18 months. I've been told this is a common problem for all full sized Chevy trucks between '96-'99.
Overall review:
This is the truck of my dreams. I love this truck and intend on keeping it for a very long time. Despite the braking and gas mileage issues, I wouldn't trade it for anything. Additionally, it holds a high resale value over competitors and is still highly sought after in todays market despite increasing gas prices. I would definitely recommend this truck for its look, performance and reliability.
