Reliability History Says It All by PDK on 02/23/2005. Trim: 1997 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 4WD, Owned 8 years.

Pros: Tank-like box frame. Beefy engine.
Cons: Falls apart. Expensive repairs. History is horrible. Gas mileage costs are more than the rig itself.
Overall review: Wow. Where to start. Since the purchase of this vehicle, we have paid over $10,000 in repairs (and it was never in a wreck). The engine blew at 70,000, the tranny went soon after, and nearly every component jumped on the band wagon along with them. It was good for average towing, and good for acceleration in general. But the reliability was so poor (I get a head ache thinking about it). All the way down to lose factory installed cables and wires that are impossible to reach inless your a elf with paper thin fingers. Even if you get it for cheap, your in trouble (and the people who sold it, regardless of what they say, are going to be grining from ear to ear that they are rid of the pile). People say many things. I say, "don't do it! It's just not worth the consequences!!!"

Old Faithful by An MSN Autos Consumer on 02/05/2004. Trim: 1997 Chevrolet Suburban C1500 2WD, Owned 7 years.

Pros: Pack anything in this burb - snowblower, pool table. Handles great with a load(holds much more than newer models and surpasses gas milage of our new one). Smooth ride, excellent gas milage with 2WD appprox. 19 at 75 miles/hr. Brakes are excellent much better than our other 4 wheel disc model. Florida to Upper Mich, rain, snow, sleet - this vehicle is dependable. Vortex engine also beats anything I have driven - excellent. When GM made this, they made a mistake. Present miles 187,000 Made in Wisconsin. Wish I could get another new one like this.
Cons: Just be careful backing up this vehicle . Park it so you can go forward.
Overall review: Excellent. GM built this one to last. Also, GM dealerships should be credited for helping maintain this vehicle.

I think I am one of the lucky ones by Bouree in Alabama on 05/27/2003. Trim: 1997 Chevrolet Suburban C1500 2WD, Owned 3 years.

Pros: Cargo space, fairly decent reliability
Cons: Brakes, Transmission
Overall review: From what I am reading, I am one of the lucky ones. Just put a new $2,200 transmission in at 146,000 miles. I hear most go out at 100,000. Brakes have been redone a few times and I am looking new rotors next to the tune of $600. Engine seems rock solid, with no problems so far.
