Little truck, long life
by Mark from Atlanta on 02/27/2009.
Trim: 1996 Chevrolet S10 Pickup Reg. Cab Short Bed 2WD, Owned more than 10 years.
1
Pros:
Best-looking small truck, comfortable seating, ABS brakes saved the truck twice, 13 yrs old and still going, paint is just now starting to wear compared to other cars that wear after five years. 2.2 engine and transmission still running smooth, never needed repair, minus typical clutch repairs(2).
Love the manual locks and windows, never gave me a problem besides 5 more seconds of my time.
Cons:
Bad-weather handling is unsafe even for safe driver like me.(got used to it) Cant use brights, because after 2 min. a short turns off all lights incl. headlights. A/C out(compressor leak) at 70,000, never fixed. Ball joint shattered(115,000) while driving sending me weaving in and out of lanes. Luckily only going 40mph, and didn't hit anything. Can't adjust bench seat for other drivers because it broke shortly after it was new. The check engine light for me always turned out to be the gas cap. Back off cap and put on straight or Buy a new cap and reset the power.
Overall review:
With only 120, 000 miles I'm expecting at least another 50,000 since it is 13 yrs old. Definitely not a sports car but it is paying for itself every year I don't have a car payment. Very happy with the S-10, would buy a chevy colorado if I knew it would last like this truck.

V6 vs 4-cylinder
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 12/04/2008.
Trim: 1996 Chevrolet S10 Pickup LS Reg. Cab Short Bed 2WD, Owned less than 1 year.
1
Pros:
plenty of power;
nice styling;
very few malfunctions;
good gas mileage
Cons:
very dangerous on wet roads;
cheap feeling interior;
needs more standard features
Overall review:
DO NOT buy 4-cylinder version. The 4.3 v6 gets better gas mileage and is much easier on the right foot. Easy to burnout on dry roads. Safer if you almost flatten rear tires on wet roads because there is no weight in the rear. I have owned the 4-cylinder version and couldn't stand it. I had to floor it on the smallest hill and usually still lost speed. Even had to downshift on level roads to maintain speed limit. I got an average of 15 mpg with the 4-cylinder! With the v6 I range from 20-25 mpg. I would only recommend the 4-cylinder if you enjoy the right lane and don't care to spend your free time pumping gas. I would have bought the v6 if it had costed twice as much because it is definitely worth it.
