Reliability Personified
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 03/15/2011.
Trim: 2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE Sedan, Owned 8 years.

Pros:
Engine is a workhorse. Fast acceleration, good handling, decent mpg (29 Highway, ~22 City), and a sleek exterior. Having owned this car for more than eight years I couldn't be happier with it. As noted by others, the body styling still compares well with more recent cars. The trunk is large, ride is smooth and quiet, seating is comfortable and roomy whether in the front of back.
Cons:
Cheap factory standard stereo, coating / details come off easily and sound quality of the deck is mediocre. This is easily fixed by installing a new stereo deck. Have had minor electrical problem which was fast and cheap to repair. Over an eight year period also had to replace water pump once. Stone chips have a habit of chipping rear passenger doors at the front corner allowing rust to form.
Overall review:
Over an eight year period this car has given very few problems and today runs just as well as the day I drove it off the lot. It still looks as sporty and stylish as many of the cars being produced today. With any car you expect some repairs to be made but with this car there were very few, well under my own expectations. The only reason I am giving this up is due to someone hitting my car as it was parked infront of my house late at night... unfortunately the driver sped off and the damage was enough for the insurance company to call it a complete loss (Although the damage doesn't look that bad, withstood collision very well). Total miles: ~182,000, very few problems, very reliable.

BEWARE - IF IT SOUNDS TO GOOD IT IS!

Pros:
0% FINANCING WHEN PURCHASED
Cons:
THE AMOUNT OF REPAIRS REQUIRED, OVER $3,500 TO DATE
OF WHICH APPROX $800 WAS UNDER WARRANTY. I STILL HAVE ITEMS TO BE WORKED ON NOW SO THE GRAND TOTAL WILL NOT BE KNOW FOR AWHILE.
Overall review:
MAYBE I JUST GOT A LEMON, I WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER UNLESS THE WARRANTY IS FOR 100,000 MILES AND THE PRICE IS LOWER THAN WHAT I PAID IN 2000 FOR THIS ONE!

Save your money for a better car
by Daryl Bonner on 08/29/2004.
Trim: 2000 Pontiac Grand Am SE1 Sedan, Owned 2 years.

Pros:
The bright red paint and somewhat (for that time) look.
Cons:
The constant repairs! Tail lights always burned out. signal light controled by ghost. Heater blower motor gone. wheel bearings wear out early. electrically this car is a night mare the electrical engineer for GM needs a new job ...... on sesame street
Overall review:
do not buy this car! It is the worst car that have ever bought new. Two more payments and we are done with PONTIAC forever based on the 2000 Grand Am SE-1. The electrical problem list would take a week to give you all the details.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT-The Ultimate Lemon
by MaryB from Erie, PA on 08/23/2004.
Trim: 2000 Pontiac Grand Am GT Coupe, Owned 5 years.

Pros:
Sporty appearance; quick acceleration. Upscale stereo system. Decent gas mileage on long trips-28-32 miles per gallon. Leather interior has maintained like-new appearance.
Cons:
There is always something wrong with it! The window motor stopped working-then the door starting letting water in and had to be re-sealed! Power steering line leaking; had to be replaced-the engine in this car so large-rubbed a hole in the line! Front brakes- scraping sound when braking; dealership corrected x 14-is okay for awhile; starts up again. Fuel guage goes from full to empty and back-dealership did diagnostic tests (over $500.00) car was fine for a few weeks. This still happens once in awhile. Low coolant light on,starting over heating-cap on one of the lines was worn & leaking-replaced-$85.00.
Overall review:
The 2000 Grand Am GT was made for someone who likes to spend a lot of time and money on maintenance and repair beyond regular maintenance & repair. There is always something needing attention, needing fixed and/or needing replaced. The above-mentioned maintenance issues are just the tip of the iceberg-there are many, many others which I didn't have room to mention! Despite its sporty appearance and quick acceleration, it will
