A great, reliable, sleeper SUV
by Snowbound in Seattle on 12/18/2008.
Trim: 1999 Mitsubishi Montero 4WD, Owned 2 years.

Pros:
Good mpg considering size, fantastic 4x4 performance especially in snow and mud, reliable.
Cons:
Torque. Interior could hold up better, but is fine for a second or 3rd car.
Overall review:
Bought this as a "spare" 3rd car to deal with the snow conditions in the winter of the PNW. Amazing off-road and winter performance, beat my Jeep Wrangler easily. In the worst storm in years, I rescued my babysitter while easily driving around other stuck SUV's. The Montero is a real off - road mountain goat, and a true competitor to the Toyata Landcruiser at about half to 2/3rds the price. It easily holds 7 when we get company visiting, but still returns 16-18 mpg. I towed a 20" travel trailer and only then found its weak spot (torque), but still made it fine. Would easily recommend. Servicing is cheap (except at dealer), but you need to regularly change fluids.
I bought mine with 104k miles and I've since added about 14k in the past three years. No issues at all, it starts up fine, handles reasonably (considering its heft and height), and has a spectacular transmission that allows me to dial in the right mode for the conditions.

Pros:
my third montero, expect to get well over 300,000 miles like the other two, a 89 and a 91...... though i must admit the 89 was problematic
Cons:
could use a little more low end grunt..
Overall review:
i would rate it a 8+.. change the shocks(too soft) and the vehicle takes on a new personality..... looking into a cold air intake and a dual exhaust

For those with deep pockets
by Weary in Washington on 02/25/2006.
Trim: 1999 Mitsubishi Montero 4WD, Owned 5 years.
Useful?
Pros:
Looks good on the exterior, great starter vehicle. Comes with lots of extras.
Cons:
Where do I begin....Built in alarm system malfunctions often. Many problems can only be fixed by paying too much at a dealership. Runs through oil, takes more TLC than most other SUV's.
Overall review:
Save your time, money and sanity. Be prepared to shovel out the money when it comes to simple fixes. Would not recommend this SUV for those with a tight buget. Extremely over rated.

Great SUV
by Soccer Mom from Oklahoma on 08/28/2005.
Trim: 1999 Mitsubishi Montero 4WD, Owned 3 years.

Pros:
This is a very stylish, good looking SUV. Comparable to the Lexus at much less money. Love the 7-passenger options. Fun to drive, decent gas mileage. Very beefy, powerful. Hit a deer once and only had a small mark on the bumper. Can't imagine what one of the other reviewers is talking about with all of the problems they have had with the vehicle. They must have gotten a lemon because we have put 75,000 plus miles with minimal problems and this is our 2nd Montero. Great 4-wheel drive vehicle. Once drove up snow and ice encrusted street while the city snow plow and ice trucks were stuck at the bottom, got very dirty looks from the work crews on that one!
Cons:
Main con is the poor turning radius. I often say that instead of turning on a dime this vehicle turns on a dollar. The rear seats are only suitable for a child or a very short adult over any distance but have come in handy when hauling kids and their friends over a short distance. Great to sleep all the way in the back even for an adult if you are back there alone.
Overall review:
This is our 2nd Montero and while we probably won't get a 3rd this car has been overall a family favorite. Looks great so suits the teenagers (our daughter is hoping to inherit it when she is old enough to drive and it may still be going strong in 3 years!) A fun and attractive vehicle that has been great on snow and ice.
