Best bang for the buck i have ever found by JDIA on 09/13/2011. Trim: 2000 Mercury Mountaineer 4WD, Owned less than 1 year.
1
Pros: Bought this car used with 142,000 miles on it. The v8 is indeed powerful, the engine and tranny both drive like new. The body is solid, no rust, dents, or body damage..good quality steel in the one i found. the interior spacious, and it a great step up from my old rusty caravan. AWD really grips the road, and i have no fear driving my two small kids around in this. Was leery of wintertime in my van...im not worried at all in the Mountaineer. best used car i have ever purchased.
Cons: blah, blah. blah..same as everyone else. My radio works, but the screen does not. My rear wiper works when it wants to. The gas is indeed cruddy yet after i installed a K&N air filter, gave it a oilchange with higher mile rated oil, and a standard tune up with plugs, ect i gained mpg. I was averaging 10 - 12 in the city at first, now im getting 13-16 in the city. Not bad for a gas guzzling v8. Even some of the newer cars today still get around that much...and this one was bought cash and is clear, no expensive payment. Also im starting to have some squeaks from the passenger side front end, so i probably will have to get a new sway bar , or strut assembly soon. Keyless entry getting touchy
Overall review: bought mine for a steal compared to a lot of the used cars i found out there. The dealer even knocked some off the price because he said he could not get the key in the driver side door....a can of WD40 fixed that when i got home. so far i could describe it as: comfortable, roomy, solid, reliable, powerful, manly, fast, and refined. The power moon roof is nice, leather is good condition, but a little chaffed on the leg areas, I would recommend this year vehicle to anyone who wants a reliable SUV and dont mind a few nit picks to fix or replace.

RECALL NIGHTMARE by An MSN Autos Consumer on 10/13/2009. Trim: 2000 Mercury Mountaineer AWD, Owned 7 years.
1
Pros: the gauges
Cons: had to replace the engine do to a flaw in the way it was put together 3yrs after I bought it. Now with the new engine it is fine, it gets great gas mileage for a SUV 32 in town or on the road.
Overall review: RELIABLE WITH A NEW ENGINE, NOT THE ONE IT CAME WITH. WHY DIDN'T THEY RECALL THAT??

Nice, pleasant SUV by Snowbound in PA on 04/03/2008. Trim: 2000 Mercury Mountaineer 4WD, Owned 1 year.
1
Pros: Interior design, Leather seats, Powerful stereo system, Easy entry and exit from vehicle, A lot of useful gadgets
Cons: Sluggish acceleration at times with the 6 cylinder engine, Loud cabin noise, Front end noises, Only one 12V outlet, Paint scratches easily, Horrendous gas mileage
Overall review: Overall I really like this SUV, its has great styling and looks, very comfortable inside. The ride can be a bit bumpy and loud at times but it is a truck and it never lets you forget that. However, on smoother roads the ride is pretty good. It eats up gas like its going out of style and with gas prices hovering around $3.30, you definitely feel the pinch. I definitely do not regret buying this vehicle and would recommend it as long as your wallet could afford it!

Very nice truck for the money! by Sprited Driver from Acton,Ma on 07/18/2006. Trim: 2000 Mercury Mountaineer AWD, Owned 3 years.
1
Pros: Very good in snow, vehicle has good power (V8), breaking is good, styling is very good (even after 6 years) not too much to say that is really bad.
Cons: Other than some repairs that where a unexpected like ABS sensor, AC clutch, and the usual up keep. The radio (along w/the Explorer) have problems w/the lights on the display blowing out, also have problem w/the subwoofer going in and out unknown if that is still the radio. Easy fix just get an aftermarket or spend the $350 to replace it or go to a savage yard and replace it for cheep money. Then there is the gas, BUT what do you expect from a SUV. Then there are the repairs that are expected like ball joints (have not done that yet) Do replace the Wranglers R/Ts with Silent Armors or Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo's.
Overall review: Very good vehicle, my wife loved it until she got her own SUV (Grand Cherokee) because of the 4X4/AWD factor. Other than that very good SUV for the price would recemmend this vehicle to others.
