Family hauler with the heart of a musclecar by Family man from Arizona on 11/29/2012. Trim: 1999 Ford Explorer Limited AWD, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: GREAT family vehicle. Hearing about the 'Explorer V8', i made the connection this was pretty much a resurrected 5.0 Cobra motor retooled for SUV duty. Great acceleration with the all-wheel drive, no problems freeway merging with a full load. Aside from the engine, interior is the #1 feature. To get all the same options (leather power/heated seats, rear AC/headphones, digital systems display, etc) a modern SUV will be over $40k. Ive come to appreciate even the small things (lighted running boards) that have helped with my elderly passengers that many SUVs dont have. Styling shows its age a bit but when waxed the pearl paint looks nice. I would buy new if i were the age i am now in '99.
Cons: Even though i dont mind as much (always driven a V8 Mustang), the gas mileage could be better, along with more baseline horsepower. Its got plenty of torque to do what its meant to do but since the 5.0 has been a performance engine I would think there could have been more factory options. Regardless, there is a huge aftermarket which i plan on upgrading with and gaining some performance AND fuel economy. Ive also heard the AWD system requires more front end maintenance and tires more often, but ide gladly trade that for the fact this is THE MOST STABLE vehicle ive ever driven in the rain.
Overall review: The only maintenance ive done so far in 1 year (100k-115k) is cruise module, new radiator, trans flush, evap sensor, and oil changes. Everything on the interior works, and the leather looks like new after conditioner. 7 disc changer w/ factory sub is great for long trips. Not to mention I never get sick of the mellow yet deep V8 music. Holds up well for a 13+ year old SUV with over 100,000 miles! If you need a good SUV for camping, fishing/trailering, or just off-roading the Explorer has tons of applications. The rear cargo space past the second row will fit a weeks worth of luggage for all passengers and then some. With a little aftermarket help this can be way more bang for the buck than buying a new car (not to mention the drivetrain in the V8 is almost bulletproof). Ive even though about buying a basic XLT 2WD 5.0 for my son when he hits high school, plenty of room, easy to maintain, and we can make a father-son hot rod project out of it ;)

Always remenber, if something small stops working fix it right away. by Kernie, bestacman in Tempe, Arizona. on 03/20/2012. Trim: 1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer AWD, Owned 10 years.
Pros: There is no additional extra that we wish the vehicle had. The radio has a casette, a cd player, several series of am and fm selection "group" buttons and a 6 disc cd changer in the console. All a/c, htg. controls and sound controls on the steering wheel. All leather seats, compartment in the rear side panels inside the back of the vehicle. All power seats, heated seats, storage on the back of the front seats. Rear a/c-htg vents, music selection with controls on the rear of the console for the rear passengers to control, right down to head phone jacks. The sun/moon roof is great and the panel that slides over it is too. Automatic glare control rear view mirror, We love it, It fits in garage!
Cons: The flat black paint used on the front grill. The design of the rear window wiper motor arrangement, others have had the same failure we have had.
Overall review: 700 characters is not near enough to describe our vehicle. I just wish I could have bought 2.

Good but not aging well by Mom from NJ on 12/05/2011. Trim: 1999 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Has been reliable up until now, now problems with 4WD
Cons: Poor Gas Mileage - Transmission Failure twice in one year!
Overall review: Our 99 Explorer has been reliable and safe up until the last year. All the door locks & auto windows have broken. Starting to rust and peeling paint. Timing chain went $$$$ and then the tranmission was rebuilt $2500. Now it's a year later and the transmission has failed. I can't afford a total rebuild again. The truck is not even worth that much with 190,000 miles.
