A LOT TO BE DESIRED by An MSN Autos Consumer on 04/24/2009. Trim: 2000 BMW 740iL, Owned 8 years.

Pros: The nicest thing about this vehicle is the overall appearance.
Cons: This vehicle has a lot to be desired in inclement weather. It does not perform well in the rain or snow. You must be very careful going through a minor puddle of water because the front is so low, it is acceptable to flooding at any given time. It is definitely not a vehicle to drive in the snow.
Overall review: I would only recommend this vehicle for purchase as a second vehicle, definitelY not primary.

A Solid Classic by BMW_BILL, Uxbridge, MA on 08/15/2011. Trim: 2000 BMW 740i, Owned 7 years.

Pros: Styling, Design, Performance...Passion
Cons: Overly Complex Systems....Requires sophisticated diagnostic equipment to repair. Simple parts are expensive to replace.
Overall review: I'm not your normal car owner. I not only love to drive these creations, I love to work and care for them. I can't believe I've owned my 740i sport for over seven years now. The car remains solid and still evokes emotion when driven. The styling also remains fresh and its funny that people still think the car is worth FAR more than the market value. OK...I love this car and it will probably end up staying with me well past it achieving "classic" status. I think it's one of the best designed BMWs. Sure, there are some issues with age but I'm learning to diagnose and repair the car when necessary...of which keeps the car affordable.

Buy and enjoy, but be aware of the costs. by Tom in Richland, WA on 08/13/2006. Trim: 2000 BMW 740i, Owned 3 years.

Pros: The car is a dream to drive. For a two-ton car, the handling is amazing...it corners like on a rail. The seats that come in the Sport package were what sold me, firm yet fitting perfectly. Four people can travel in true comfort.
Cons: The plastic radiator is its Achilles heel, blowing out at ~50,000 miles. You just don't expect a car of this stature to leave you stranded by the side of the road. This is a chronic problem for the E38. I'v had this car for three years, and it seems that 4 months can't go by without one of its warning lights turning on, signalling time to part with another $500 or so. (The last light announced the failure of the ABS computer and speed sensor, which set me back $1,400.)
Overall review: If you can grin and bear the ownership costs, this is quite a car to drive.

Velvet smooth rocket !!! by Baz from California on 02/12/2003. Trim: 2000 BMW 740i, Owned 1 year.

Pros: Precision engineering, Breathtaking power and accelaration. Glides smoothly, even at 140 mph, I'm told :). The interior is luxurious yet functional, e.g. navigation system
Cons: very little !! mainly the cost of ownership. Maybe DVD based GPS?
Overall review: An awesome car that makes your daily commute a joy !!!

Un justly accused of being a bad car. owners need to do the Maintanence. by An MSN Autos Consumer on 10/06/2012. Trim: 2000 BMW 740iL, Owned 4 years.
1
Pros: Love the looks and ride. all the options, heated steering wheel and seats, Navigation. Car has 140K and still runs so smooth you can't hear or feel it. Car gets 14 town & 25 MPG highway
Cons: It can be pricy to repair if you go to dealership. If you do not take care of the car, things can and will go bad. You have to change your coolent every 24 months or it will ruin the plastic radiator parts and thermostat. You will also need to upgrade your water pump with one that has a metal impeller. Do Not listen to BMW, You do have to change the filter and fluid in your trans mission at least every 70K or you will be replacing the transmission. Do not cut corners on fluids or filters and the car will wun like new, Mine does.
Overall review: Car is a dream to drive and ride in plenty of room for anything you would ever need to get into the trunk and plenty of room for passengers. It is a joy to drive long distance, very quiet and the seats are Great!!!!
