My experience with VW
by TEMPRSS on 10/22/2008.
Trim: 1999 Volkswagen Jetta GL TDI, Owned 8 years.

Pros:
TRhis is a car that is easy to handel and you can have a lot of fun with...
Cons:
This car has been in the shop 37 times in 9 years that I owned it. now the transmission has gone out and I have only hit 146,000 thats not to mention I have replaced 8 batteries, 3 cat converters, rack and pinion, alternator, and paid thousands in general maintence to try and prevent these problems. If you love working on car and problem solving this car is for you....... Oh but NEVER take it to the dealership they have jerked me around more then I can count find a good mechanic that you trust in the bay area Campbell European is a very nice place.
Overall review:
Over all its a car....

farfromlosin" turbo diesel jetta
by benjamin from juneau, alaska on 08/01/2002.
Trim: 1999 Volkswagen Jetta GL TDI, Owned 3 years.

Pros:
handles exceptionally well, excellent braking system, the car just flows through high speed curves.
Cons:
plastic parts break easily and are very expensive to replace.
ex: glove box, cup holders, undercarriage engine cover.
diesel engine acceleration is a problem. it just doesn't have enough horsepower. 10-15 more would make it comparable to the 4-cylinder engine.
Overall review:
not too bad for a diesel car, but still far from perfect. i've driven the jetta tdi for 3 years and 60,000 miles as a pizza delivery driver and it is a choice comfortable car to ride in 8 hours a day. if you're looking for performance, don't get the diesel! it is the slowest car on the road as far as acceleration! if you're looking for great mileage and long rides this is the car for you.

Great compact car

Trim: 1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS TDI, Owned 5 years.

Pros:
For its model year, in its price category and size, absolutely nothing compares. Base equipment, 4 airbags, 4disc - ABS brakes, electric windows & moonroof, height and length adjustable steering wheel, height adjustable seats, AC - 5 star safety rating, CD player, with a comfortable yet sporty ride/drive. The Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla of that time did not even offer ABS braking or 4 air bags as an option, they were unavailable. Reliability has been near perfect four the four years that I have owned the Jetta. It still drives pretty much like a new car, even though Washington DC roads and the beltway are not reputed for their car friendliness. I just love driving this vehicle.
Cons:
Had some innovative interior design that were poorly adapted for US habits, cupholder too small and delicate, glove box cannot be used as a table (it breaks). All stuff I can really live with. It has excellent road and handling characteristics, the price for that is a relatively low front, a lot of people seemingly do not know how to park without their car hitting the curb, in the Jetta that gets to be expensive. Overall dealership service is PATHETIC, mechanics and service personnel are improperly trained and practice "used car salesman" techniques to force you to replace parts which are fine. That can get very expensive. A real problem are the window regulators, and AFM sensors(recall)
Overall review:
Most of the trouble with the cup-holder, window regulators, and MAF sensor were modified the following years (we have a 2004 golf that over 2 years has had zero problems) After 6.5 years the Jetta remains a great car to drive, and looks good. This web site is full of complaints about reliability, indeed there seem to be "moderate" problems with the engine (MAF sensor) and the charging system. The same year Honda civic, has "significant" engine problems reported, with the Toyota Corolla, "moderate" problems with the engine as well as accessories (air bag) are reported. Maybe they are cheaper to repair which makes failure more tolerable, but they come not even close to the comfort, fun and safety the Jetta offers. I would recommend this car to anyone who does not look at driving as a chore but as something enjoyable. If you are only looking for a simple reliable appliance, don't buy a Jetta. If you like to drive a fun, comfortable and safe car at a sensible cost, this is your ride.

VR6 = style + comfort + speed + personality
by Ed on 05/30/2006.
Trim: 1999 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros:
I love my VR6, semi luxury entry level car, much faster than 1.8T. All my friends think it's a sweet ride, gf loves it 2 specially the heated seats and sunroof. Fast on hwy, sleek ride, i recommend it all the way, I'd buy another one in the future
Cons:
Well it's made in mexico so, the cup holder, arm wrest lid and glove comparment will break. The heated mirrors tend to fade from blue to brown. Syntetic oil change and supreme 91 gas (minimum req.) are not cheap. Replacement of key or starter are pricy too.
Overall review:
What a great car my VR6, stylish, smooth, fast, popular and can be purchased for cheap as the resale value is not like in a japanese. Once you get this, you won't want any more japanese cars.
