If you like your VW service department...
by Horribly Disappointed from NH on 05/09/2005.
Trim: 1999 Volkswagen Golf GL 2.0, Owned 6 years.

Pros:
Love the looks-comfortable interior-decent mileage
Cons:
Very tempermental car! At one point, I was convinced that it needed exorcising after changing the headlights and break lights twice in one month (this is an ongoing problem that is addressed every couple of months-in fact I am due for a trip to NAPA.)
Check engine light comes on for no apparent reason.
I have invested atleast $1000 for every year I have owned it on various repairs-too numerous to account for at this point.
Overall review:
I will never ever ever buy another VW or even toy with the idea of purchasing an AUDI.

Good Investment
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 07/27/2004.
Trim: 1999 Volkswagen Golf GLS TDI, Owned 1 year.
Useful?
Pros:
Fuel economy, strong torque, smooth automatic (4-speed), Above average sound system, smooth and quiet operation for size class. Very strong car that is ageing well.
Cons:
Paint is beginning to bubble under front wheel well - could be from damage caused by previous owner, or a defect... I'm thinking damage. Acceleration from 60-100kph is less then stellar, as well as 0-120kph sprints, but around town, and initial acceleration, as well as 110-150kph highway passing is fantastic for engine size. Squeaks, rattles, noises from car... Suspension tiring after 100K Kms.
Overall review:
It's a fine automobile, but you need to want to own one to appreciate it... Don't buy it if you need to cross shop other cars and read JD power/Consumers reports, then it won't be the car for you... If you are interested in cars, and know a little about them, then this car will reward.

worst car I have ever owned
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 05/05/2004.
Trim: 1999 Volkswagen Golf GLS 2.0, Owned 5 years.
Useful?
Pros:
Great look.
Very comfortable, and fun to drive.
Cons:
Horrible reliability.
Expensive parts.
unpleasant dealer and repair experiences
Car has to be fixed every month, from electrical problems,to A/C
compressor blowing out, rear window shattered while using defroster.
Car almost caught fire because of unblown fuse.
Overall review:
Except for the look and the fun to drive, I can't find any reason to buy this vehicle.
For me it's been a money pit and a maintenance nightmare.
I will never buy a VW again.

Dissappointed Golf Fan
by Bucsfan from Va Beach on 01/06/2004.
Trim: 1999 Volkswagen Golf GLS 2.0, Owned 5 years.
Useful?
Pros:
The styling, and fun to drive. It handles very well.
Cons:
Not enough HP and should get better gas mileage. Engine problems and eats tires. Front seats are comfortable, but not enough room in the back. Will have to purchase a 4th set of tires with only 72K's on it.
Overall review:
A fun little car to drive and great looks, but needs alot of help in the problem solving of all the problems it is having. I expect a better car from the Germans, So it will be a long time before I buy another VW
