WORST car I ever owned! by CommPilot43 From Central Coast of California on 06/01/2009. Trim: 1997 Volkswagen Jetta GLS, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Color Winsor blue was great Car looked good from outside. Sporty
Cons: Problems: Leaking trunk from day 1. Recall brakes from 7 months, Paint peeling after 19 months, Radio failed after 26 months , ETC. Airbag failed 4 years over 2000.00 to fix, Electric motors in windows failed. Door tracks poor quaility replaced, 110.00 each. year 5 CV both boots failed. Year 5 Check engine lights on for Airbag again, All work done by factory dealer too.
Overall review: Jetta has lost a customer and Please be careful picking this brand of vehicle when searching for a used car. Volkswagen should have stood by us on this car with this many issues and they failed to respond to any of our letters. Very poor company :(

the v dub by brody from p town on 02/03/2011. Trim: 1997 Volkswagen Jetta GL, Owned 1 year.
Pros: its fun to drive, it handles good, it has pretty good acceleration, and it does good in the snow.
Cons: i have owned it for just under a year and i have rebuilt the motor, the sun roof isnt working properly, the door randomly wont open, door locks are broken, just had to redo the wiring harness on the steering column because the ignition switch got fried.
Overall review: i wouldnt buy this car again unless it had just been completely restored and theres no reason that anyone should be restoring a 14 year old car.

PIECE O **** CAR by Tammy- Whiting, Indiana on 07/16/2010. Trim: 1997 Volkswagen Jetta GLS, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Gas milage. That's about the only good thing.. (When my check engine light isn't on for a purge canister problem)
Cons: everything. Driving the car you feel like you're in a go-kart. Electrical problems left and right.. this car was supposed to be a great driving car.. only if you don't want to go into second or third gear. My transmission shifts extremely hard, (supposedly fixed), driver's window doesn't work, key has a hard time opening car door, or for that matter starting the car (have to shake steering wheel to start) air conditioner going through cans of freon like water. Bought the car for $1500 and put just as much into it to keep it going.
Overall review: I would not recommend even my worst enemy to buy a jetta. Everything to fix on this "go-kart" is extremely expensive!!

VR6 made me fall in love, now I'm on the highway stranded by WOBJ197 from State College, PA on 05/03/2008. Trim: 1997 Volkswagen Jetta GLX, Owned 2 years.
Pros: How it drives; Good speed, very spunky, good brakes, and decent handling. I like the way it looks, even to this day. The leather seats are nice as well. Very smooth transmission. Good gas milage for a V6.
Cons: Everything else. If a part of this vehicle deals with electric, you can count on it failing at least once while owning the car. Fog lights, off and on. Heated seats, only one coil in the passenger seat works anymore. My ABS light has been on 6 months after the shop has fixed the problem.
Overall review: I got this car when I was 18. At the time it was a great car. If you drive it right, you can get good gas milage out of it, but if you aren't conscientious, you will only get around 20mpgs. I'm currently shopping for new cars because it has reached 120k miles and I am getting out of Volkswagen. I only recommend this car to young drivers who want to feel a little spoiled for a decent price. If you want a reliable car that you only need to take to the shop for oil changes, shop elsewhere. However, if you can afford to fork over some cash here and there, this is a very fun car to drive.
