The Stylish Little Hatchback of Mediocrity
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 12/16/2004.
Trim: 1996 Volkswagen Golf GL, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros:
The VW emblem on the front, surprising amount of storage space, small enough to park anywhere, the warranty I have for the first year that covers the car's list of annoying little problems, high resale value
Cons:
The interior is cramped when more than 2 people ride in the vehicle, weak acceleration, jumpy automatic transmition, the pinacle of minor annoyances (speedometer broke, liscence plate holder is falling off, transmission has acted up in the past), weak sound system (especially considering it has 6 speakers), shakes and shimmies at high speeds (above about 85 mph), your friends might laugh at you and be able to humiliate you on the highway as they speed by, it gets about 20 mpg...which is pathetic for a car of its small size
Overall review:
Why did I get this car? A guy my family knows at a dealership recommended it. Now I've had it for 7 months and I'm somewhat satisfied. Sure it's had some issues, but they appear to be fixed for now and the warranty is still in effect until May 2005 in case it tries anything else. The way this car looks is far better than the way it drives and handles...for such a small car it can be a real pain to navigate through turns. It always starts, however, and is generally pleasant to ride in. I've also always kind of had a thing for VW's (except the Beatle and Van), although I'd rather have a Jetta or Passat any day.

Just Won't Quit.

Pros:
Great consistant gas mileage (34mpg). Fun to drive. Adequate power for most driving conditions. Most parts easily obtainable and resonably priced. Never have had any mechanical problems.
Cons:
Seat cushions break down easily and have to be replaced; I'm on my second set. Rubber trim strips on doors came off at around 100,000 miles. After looking at many other Golfs of this vintage, it seems to be common problem.
Overall review:
220,000 miles and still going strong. I keep current on my maintenance which key to keeping these cars trouble free. This is my second Golf and 6th VW. My Dealer/Service Garage wants me to buy a newer model but must patiently wait until I am ready to part with this car. In my opinion, the Golf is by far the most reliable of all the VW lines.
