A great drive by Mike, Portland, OR on 11/28/2007. Trim: 1995 Volkswagen Jetta III GLS, Owned 7 years.
Pros: This is the best looking generation of the Jettas. The car has a decent amount of power and handles wonderfully. The sound system is good, the ride is smooth, yet tight. The car is a blast to drive. It's been a relatively reliable car.
Cons: The electronics leave much to be desired. While the power train is reliable, two of the power windows don't work (one is a total mystery as to why), the cruise control is out, and the sunroof no longer works. I had to fix the power locks. If I bought another Jetta, I'd look for one without the power options.
Overall review: The car is a great driving machine, but be careful about the optional accessories.

The Jetta that could ... by Jetta Night a.k.a. Skywalker on 01/22/2003. Trim: 1995 Volkswagen Jetta III GLS, Owned 8 years.
Pros: Roomy, large trunk for a small car, the body styling is still attractive on this 8 year old vehicle. Stock radio is pretty good...Great power for a 4 banger. No major mechanical problems,135,000 miles. Original clutch (I hope I didn't jinx myself). Handles great in all weather conditions. Low cost to maintain and excellent fuel mileage.
Cons: Electrical problems. Fan switch and relay to blower motor went at about 57K mi. Dealer wanted $500 to fix, parts were about $100 so I fixed it myself. Dash lights went out at about 60K, I'm living with that. Road noise is a little excessive, but I guess thats normal for small cars in this class. The paint on the roof is starting to fade. The interior plastic is cheap. Small spare tire uhhg!!! No moon roof or power windows to report on. Wish it was built in Germany :(
Overall review: Over all this car is a work horse and after 135K miles logged on the odometer this car still runs like it has full power. It is a solid car and the styling is still holding up after 8 years. Very important that you follow the recommended service.

Lasts like a ROCK. by VWLover, USA on 09/06/2002. Trim: 1995 Volkswagen Jetta III GL, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: I bought a 95 Jetta GL with 80,000 miles in 2002. At first I was skeptical because it needed a lot of new things like brakes, brake pads, tie rod and new tires. VW parts are pricey and I paid $600 in repairs. BUT, since then I have had NO problems with that car. It's steady. It holds on to the road like a rock, even in wind and storm. It moves like a rocket especially on 5th gear. It's small enough to navigate in and out of traffic, & to park in the tiniest space, but powerful like a sports car. Mine is a stick.
Cons: The interior is very basic. No bells and whistles with this car. But then again, if you're a buyer on a budget like I was, you won't find that to be something to complain about. It's also manual so you have to bend over the gear to close the passenger window. Stressssful.
Overall review: Full recommendation for the JETTA III GL. I suggest using carfax to run the history of the VW you are looking to buy and also getting an independent mechanic. Don't buy a lemon. But if you find a well kept VW, I think you'll find that you've made the right choice. I know I did. Listen, my parents raised 3 kids in the early to late 70s with a VW Beetle and that car lasted our family & dog for about 12 years. If you want a car that doesn't whine; a car that can take any type of weather; a car that doesn't need much nursing like the freaking SAAB, get yourself a VW. The spare parts are expensive but once you fix it the car is good to run again without a sneeze for a long time. They are strong vehicles and if you treat them well, they treat you with respect & they last a lifetime.
