Indestructible little tank! by Andrew on 02/17/2013. Trim: 1991 Volkswagen Passat GL, Owned 4 years.
Pros: It gets good mileage for a heavyish vehicle, and back in '91 I don't think fuel economy was that important. The handling is superb, you never get a feeling of insecurity in curves or when going very fast (not that its legal to go that fast...just sayin') like you would in other vehicles. As others have said, lots of little things go wrong with it, BUT it is indestructible, it was the Danish army's vehicle. Mine is 21 years old, no rust and is my daily driver. And it doesn't look like its 21 years old. It's unique, it's not hard finding it in the shopping mall parking lot.
Cons: Cost of parts but I think thats due to quality (theres no rust under my hood, and I cant say that about many vehicles of the same age that run regularly). Its not a winter champion, it takes a while for the heat to get going but that may be typical of cars back then. But it always starts without a boost (theres no plug), unless its colder than -25Celsius. Also not a lover of very humid weather.
Overall review: It can be a problematic car for those uninterested in getting to know the car. But if you're a willing do it yourselfer, theres lots of help from VW gurus in online forums etc so you don't have to run to the garage every little time. And don't trust your VW to just any mechanic, do your research, ask other VW owners where they go. Because a mechanic will never say he cant fix it. And prior to 1994, these came straight from Germany, they weren't built in the U.S. which makes it different, and your mechanic probably just learned American/Asian cars, So I wouldn't trust this car to someone who isn't a VW specialist..

ALMOST A TRUCK by NEED A DODGE "HEMI"TO HUNT IN SOUTH DAKOTA on 01/24/2004. Trim: 1991 Volkswagen Passat GL, Owned 4 years.
Pros: It handles nice on ice, gets good gas milage but also has great acceleration for passing, has a nice smooth ride. It also has plenty of room for luggage in the trunk.
Cons: When somthing goes wrong with it its hard to find sombody to work on it, also the parts are expensive. Another problem is the seats are not very comfortable on long trips. Its also hard to get in and out of, especially with the automatic seat belts hooking or nocking you in the head every time you open the doors.
Overall review: Nice car for going places but not good for deer hunting or bird hunting, although it did go through some deep snow on a few section lines that I went down, its a heavy car and handles nice in icy conditions. Overall it is a good vehicle.

"A fun and enjoyable lemon" by Sir Erk from Saskatoon on 07/07/2006. Trim: 1991 Volkswagen Passat GL, Owned 2 years.
Pros: This is a blast to drive. A few people I know have referred to the 91 passat as a Tank and I have had the chance to find out why. Taking the car out on grid roads and through fields has proven to be great fun when I have had the time to waste. Nothing can actually break this car.
Cons: Nothing can break this car directly but the vehicle itself is a lemon. Though it's fun to drive, even with minimal wear and tear, the car will break down often. In hot weather the car will not start unless I nearly break the skin on my hand turning the key. This is a problem not with the starter (that things hardy as all get out) but with a coil into the ignition assembly. The transmission is breaking down and I have heard this is a constant problem with the 91 passat. The heater core blew recently and that's a $900 repair in the shop. CV Joints will need to be replaced here and there. They do not last. Finally, fuel delivery is a problem that no mechanic can figure out.
Overall review: Fun car to drive but don't purchase one now unless you have money to spare for maintenance. Even if you do all your own work, parts are going to eat through your wallet like a hot knife through butter. Pay attention to the transmission. If the thing slips when you're passing about 80 Kilometers Per Hour, run away. It's shot and there's no hope. It's a Lemon but it's still fun to rip around in. The strangest problem with the 91 VW Passat is a fuel delivery problem that can crop up. Press down on the gas peddle and it will hesitate and then sputter into motion like a turbo charged slug. Fuel injectors don't seem to he be trouble here...who knows.
