My Little War Machine by An MSN Autos Consumer on 09/23/2008. Trim: 1989 Volkswagen Golf 2-Door hatchback, Owned 9 years.
Pros: Most reliable car ever made. You can beat on this little take and it will never give up.
Cons: Location of the starter (Under exhaust manifold).
Overall review: If you are lucky find one of these cars scoope it up. They are super fun to drive and will treat you good if regular maintenance is performed. Buy the service manual too.

Stomper Toy by An MSN Autos Consumer on 12/11/2003. Trim: 1989 Volkswagen Golf 2-Door hatchback, Owned 4 years.
Pros: Very, Very quick on the highway... you can beat on it all day. Runs for ever if you keep up on tune-ups and oil changes...this car is a tank.
Cons: cheep snap on VW parts and the crappy head liners
Overall review: One of the most reliable motors ever built

German Hooptie by Sergeant in Germany on 06/23/2003. Trim: 1989 Volkswagen Golf GL 2-Door hatchback, Owned 1 year.
Pros: Roomy and comfortable enough. Nice steering wheel and clock. Good workhorse engine.
Cons: It won't start when engine is hot. Replaced starter switch; same problem - possibly a piece of bad plastic under the switch. Had a wiring problem with the headlights. A cup holder and a right-arm-rest would be good amenities.
Overall review: If you spend a couple of hundred dollars a year on maintenace/repairs it's a pretty good little car.

Fantastic transportation by Jeremy, St. Louis on 02/14/2003. Trim: 1989 Volkswagen Golf GL 4-Door hatchback, Owned 4 years.
Pros: The styling has aged well. When properly maintained, the car will perform consistently. I still get excellent fuel mileage and the car is simply fun to drive. If/when the car needs maintenence, the parts are relatively inexpensive. It took Ford 20 years to make a car this fun, functional, and affordable (with the Focus). My car has had extreme distress(caused by me) and when repaired, ran like the day I bought it.
Cons: The paint does wear and fade. Some of the interior/dash parts are of plastic that brittles with age. I own a 4 door and all of the passenger door handles that are infrequently used have broken. Oddly, the driver door continues to function perfectly!
Overall review: I can wholeheartedly recommend this car to anyone. It is particularly good as a first car, an additional car, or for a city dweller. It handles very well, gets fantastic mileage, is inexpensive to maintain and can be parked virtually anywhere!
