Toyota Sienna Overall Succesfull Minivan
by Paul Valencia on 07/16/2012.
Trim: 1998 Toyota Sienna LE 4-Door, Owned more than 10 years.

Pros:
4 captains chairs so second row passengers are treated like first class guests , Excellent vision forward
Very reliable , its 14 years old and we are still debating if its time to go buy a new one . Our previous van
an Oldsmobile was a mechanical disaster. The Sienna is like a best friend . Totally trustworthy . Solid amount of
interior space for the compact dimensions . I am always surprised at how cramped medium SUV are VS the SIenna .
Perfect family vehicle great for beach trips, camping trips , hauling players and gear to hockey games , carrying firewood.
Runs on low octane gasoline
Cons:
Blind spots on drivers pillar , brakes dont last very long and need yearly rotor resurfacing . Both Sliding door rattles . Tires
wears before warranty .
Dash light stopped working , seatbelts broken not under life time warranty unlike Honda . Needs self leveling suspension .
Our transmission was replaced at 53k by Toyota even though it was slightly past the warranty . New tranny has now over 100.000 miles and runs great
Suspension became loose , steering is vague and caused car to drift . Once diagnosed (it took multiple garages) it steers like new again.
21 MPG average
Overall review:
165000 miles of reliable and comfortable motoring . We have kept this vehicle the longest of all the vehicles we have owned because it serves multiple uses both as commuter vehicle , cargo hauling , taxi cab and out of town camping trips.

Going for 500,000

Pros:
My 1998 Sienna v6 has 252,000+ miles on it and it's still going strong. No breakdowns, ever. The oil has been changed every 5000 miles, and all maintainence has been done on schedule by my dealer, so they caught potential problems before they happened. The ride is great, and has been since I got rid of the original equipment tires.
Cons:
The only design flaw I know of is that the heater/ac doesn't have an air filter that can be cleaned or replaced.
The only bugs have been with the interior lights. In the speedometer panel, I've had to replace the whole set twice due to burnout. The light that tells the driver his seat belt is not buckled somehow got its signals reversed - now it's on when I'm buckled up, and off when I'm not.
Overall review:
This has been a great car for us. I can't recommend that others buy a 1998 Sienna, due to age and maintenence issues (I can still hear Mom saying "You don't know where that thing's been - you're just buying other people's problems!"), but MINE still purrs!

Pros:
High Reliability, Quality Build, Practical Features, Best Crash Test Results, Solid Acceleration, Quiet Ride, Great Sound System, Car-like Drivability.
Cons:
Minor rattle in sliding door, Stereo Placement. Very Very few complaints about this vehicle. It is past 80,000 miles and running like new.
Overall review:
When your requirements for a minivan are topped off with Safety, Reliability, and competitive price, the only one that meets all three is the Sienna. For us, there was no other choice. Fords and Chrysler/Dodge have spotty reliability (though the 1999- Fords have a much improved record), GM products fair VERY poorly in crash tests, as do most imports, and the Honda is simply overpriced, though otherwise an excellent van. The Honda would have been our second choice.
