the get around car
by An MSN Autos Consumer on 05/22/2008.
Trim: 1996 Plymouth Neon Sedan, Owned less than 1 year.

Pros:
This car is great on gas, it handles high speeds fairly well, it looks decent, and it has good acceleration and high speed. The engine can take the beating i give it daily.
Cons:
The stock o2 censors on the engine go out quickly and need to be replaced. They effect gas miliage and performance... Also if it gos out the check engine light comes on at diffrent times... A after market o2 censor costs around $40.00. That is the only defect these cars often have
Overall review:
They are great get around cars. I have driven alot of rigs but this car is great.

Unreliable Lemon
by PurpleNeon on 12/24/2003.
Trim: 1996 Plymouth Neon Sport sedan, Owned 6 years.
1
Pros:
One of the few good things I can say about the Neon is that it has really good pick-up . . . you can easily speed ahead of people on the highway when you need to and also make fast turns.
Cons:
Overall low quality of parts and composition, lack of reliability.
Overall review:
Someone said that, when you buy a Neon, Chrysler should give you a second car to drive while the Neon is in the shop. That is well said. My Neon has experienced many of the common problems: a blown head gasket; leaking trunk; problems with spark plugs, gas pump, etc. My roommate had a 1990 Mazda that was more reliable than my 1996 Neon. It goes into the shop at least once every 2 months, needing expensive repairs ranging from $100 to over $1000, leaving me without transportation. I plan to replace this car ASAP, as I am tired of waiting with baited breath for it to break down and leave me stranded again. After owning this car, I do not expect to ever purchase an American car again. But if I do, I can guarantee that I will NEVER purchase another Chrysler product.
I certainly would NOT recommend the 1996 Neon as a used car purchase. You are much better off buying a Honda or Mazda of the same year or a little older, because I guarantee it will be far more relaible.
