96 Altima!! by Luis on 06/18/2010. Trim: 1996 Nissan Altima GXE, Owned less than 1 year.
Pros: Good on gas milage, very impressed by the horses that it pushes for how old it is. Engine still works pretty good, current milage 148K.
Cons: The only thing that i don't like is the timing belt tensioner problem that gets loose with time and then makes a noise touching the valve cover.
Overall review: Bought the car for a lady for $250. She wanted to take this car to the yunk yard and i'm glad i rescued it from her. I had to do some maintance myself, like a tune up, but besides that i love the car and im glad i bought.

Treat it right and it will return the favor by JD, SoCal on 11/09/2011. Trim: 1996 Nissan Altima GXE, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Other than normal wear and tear items needed to be replace, its downright impressive.
Cons: Nothing really
Overall review: 265,000+ miles. That's a lot ! Replaced: CV boots, then axles, then wheel bearings (@$450 per side). Radiator, of course battery and alternator, motor mounts. Considering the miles I've put on it, really I can't complain. Also have been in 3 accidents with it, one where I was t-boned, and it still drives GREAT. "96 Altima is a very well built car.

Reliable member of the family by Happy Alty Owner from Mesa AZ on 02/07/2009. Trim: 1996 Nissan Altima GXE, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Mechanically sound car that has very few issues. Gas mileage always in the 24 to 30 mpg range, which is pretty good for a 2.4L engine. Love that the car has a timing chain instead of a rubber belt that needs regular changing.
Cons: For whatever reason, alternators do not last very long on the first gen Altimas. Some last 75K miles; some last only 30K. Seats don't have much lumbar support, so your legs feel fatigued to say the least. Lots of rattles around the front bumper area--probably due to poorly made plastic clips and anchors. OEM headlights are horrible in terms of appearance and light output; recommend aftermarket replacement.
Overall review: After buying this car used from a dealer lot with 22K miles in 1997, I have owned this car for 12 years and now have 280K miles. The only major issue that arose was a tranny that blew at 258K. Considering the high mileage, I almost got rid of the car at that point. However, I decided to take a risk and install a used tranny from a wrecking yard. Turned out to be well worth the risk, for the car still runs perfectly. Aside from the typical rattles for this body style, this car has been solid. If you are a shadetree mechanic, this car is pretty easy to work on. Lots of aftermarket parts are available to extract a few more horses out of the KA24 engine.

altima gxe by An MSN Autos Consumer on 04/26/2007. Trim: 1996 Nissan Altima GXE, Owned 1 year.
Pros: It's really fun to drive and it gets up to 70mph in no time. The fuel economy is nice also. The interior is laid out nicely and is quite comfortable.
Cons: Occasionaly there is a bad smell that comes out of the heater that smells like burning oil. The distributer was replaced twice in 4 months. During normal acceleration the transmission is jerky. There is something wrong with the electrical equipment in this car. The dash lights go on and off when going over bumps. The radio works when it feels like it. Also it's beginning to rust.
Overall review: Somehow this thing has lasted for 142000 miles. It's always a guessing game as to whether it will work or just stall in traffic. I like this car but it would be nice if it was more reliable.
