Could Have Been a Disaster. by Mike on 01/21/2004. Trim: 1998 Mercury Mountaineer 4WD, Owned 3 years.
Pros: Overall styling and ride OK, a little bouncy...but nice. Additionally, I liked the height (ground clearance).
Cons: Had little problems that seemed re-occuring. Throttle body CONSTANTLY getting dirty and coughing at idle (3 air filters replaced in 2 years to attempt to correct). No, I didn't live in a dusty climate! OD Off Light constantly flashed (for 4 months straight!), shop told me it was likely a sign of transmission sensor failure OR transmission was likely to need rebuilt SOON. I drove another month on it, and it began hard shifting on down shifts. Only Dealer could read error codes, and I was displease with EVERY Ford dealer I have been to (for various Service reasons...owned an Explorer previously). Will not EVER take my car to a Ford dealer for service.
Overall review: Too much money at stake to risk in this car....buy something else.

Great Truck by Frank, Syracuse, NY on 01/07/2012. Trim: 1998 Mercury Mountaineer AWD, Owned 1 year.
Pros: I like the way it handles on the highway the further distant you drive the better it rides!!!
Cons: The rust that builds up around the gas tank and in some areas.
Overall review: This vehicles is very reliable I am looking to buy another one newer and keep this one too.

No way by JimboNYC on 01/29/2006. Trim: 1998 Mercury Mountaineer AWD, Owned 8 years.
Pros: The power of a V8.
Cons: Where to begin...poor engine design (accessing spark plugs is a nightmare), oil filter develops leaks from the stabilizer bar hitting into it, electrical problems with the radio display and gauges, engine needed to be replaced at 15K, major transmission problems at 70K even with the tranny oil being replaced every year, of course who can forget the Firestone tire fiasco, the hood doesn't stay up anymore, the leather seats cracked after 2 years...this list goes on and on...
Overall review: No wonder Ford is in the gutter. I will never buy a Ford product again. My Honda is at 150K with absolutely none of the problems this crapmobile Mercury put me through.

Lemon by Ohio on 04/24/2004. Trim: 1998 Mercury Mountaineer 4WD, Owned 6 years.
Pros: Looks good and that is about it.
Cons: Bought brand new. Last FORD product I will ever buy. Currently, the LCD on the Premium Sound System gave out over a year ago. 300.00 to fix. Rear gate won't lock and other misc problems. Between the junk tires our FORD dealer gave us during the Firestone recall and all of the times it's been in the shop for other recalls and problems, and the treatment from the FORD Consumer Dept, it will be a cold day you know where before another FORD product sets in my garage. You would think FORD would put out a better product seing how they make 15K on every Explorer and Mountaineer they have sold.
Overall review: Don't Buy a New or Used FORD Product

Not as sweet as it appears by NYOwner on 01/02/2004. Trim: 1998 Mercury Mountaineer AWD, Owned 4 years.
Pros: For comfort and "extras" - leather seating, accessories, etc. it's a good looking truck. Lots of power.
Cons: The driver's side door has had numerous problems (won't unlock, door won't open door from inside), this problem also extends to the back doors, the drive shaft is shot and will have to be fixed soon, the antennae will no longer retract, windshield washer fluid pump had to be replaced, back wiper will not work anymore, and even my mechanic complains about how ridiculously expensive replacement parts are for this vehicle. Stereo controls in the back seat no longer work, and the mileage is terrible.
Overall review: This is a good looking vehicle, unfortunately, there is no quality underneath, and replacement parts are too expensive!
