The reliability of the engine
Cons:
Brake dust on front wheels due to up and down mountains.

This is a great car for the money and style. I have owned 5 Sable LS's and each were very reliable and had good aerodynamic design for good gas milage.

Transmission and paint issues at 38,000 kilometres
by Okanagan Barbee on 04/03/2008.
Trim: 1997 Mercury Sable GS, Owned more than 10 years.
Useful?
Pros:
Nice body style - a mid price car with an upscale appearance, good gas mileage, roomy interior, bought it new and it has treated me well until recently. It has been babied and well maintained from the day it was new. Good on the highway and easy to park around town.
Cons:
Transmission seal went - opted to replace only the seal ($1100.00) instead of the suggested torque converter and complete rebuild ($3800.00) - so far, so good. Was surprised to have this problem as the car just turned 38,000 Km (Canada) even though it's 11 years old - very low mileage. Also, the paint blistered and peeled off the entire roof for no apparent reason, body shop said it had not been primed properly at the factory, it's never been in an accident and still has all original paint (except for the roof) and the body has no rust, dents or dings.
Overall review:
It has been a good, reliable car - would like to upgrade to something more sporty but the low mileage prevents me from selling it for the minimal dollars this car would fetch. At this point it owes me nothing so I will continue to drive it and drool at those cute little Pontiac Solstices passing me by. The back seat has never been sat in so I really don't need a vehicle this size !
