Great American product! by Harry from Michigan. on 03/04/2005. Trim: 1997 Mercury Sable Wagon GS, Owned 6 years.

Pros: Our wagon has plenty of cargo and passenger room. 3 seats for 7 people. Very reliable. Great in Michigan snow. I have owned this car for over 6 years. It now has 153,000+ miles and still runs great. Good gas mileage. Very reliable.
Cons: Nothing to dislike.
Overall review: Will buy another one soon. Who says America can't build reliable cars?

Not Reliable by Maine on 05/15/2007. Trim: 1997 Mercury Sable Wagon GS, Owned 2 years.
1
Pros: Plenty of room for cargo when it runs right it drives and rolls great. I should say it drive well on long trips. and it's comfortable.
Cons: Bad Egr(Ford knows about this DPFE control), bad oil pan leaks are common, overall the emmisions and powertrain are full of issues and failures. I've fixed a TR sensor , DPFE, IAC, Throttle body, and oil pan and other leaks. Still with correct diagnostic and repair in 3-6 mos. another check engine light comes on. Always something new to fix.
Overall review: Don't buy the wagon, or the sedan they are bad cars at 80,00 to 114,000 miles, mine has nickeled and dimed my wallet to death. I think I'll junk it soon and save my money.

Shame on the engineers who designed this piece of junk. by Manish, Fremont, CA on 09/10/2004. Trim: 1997 Mercury Sable Wagon GS, Owned 7 years.

Pros: A lot of space for hauling stuff.
Cons: I don't know how Ford Design engineers can sleep at night. I am a mechanical engineer, and this car can be a testimonial to
Overall review: Ford front wheel drive transmissions are an absolute disaster. Their first generation fwd trannies, they realised that a lot of metal was wearing down and then acting as an abrasive and screwing up trannies, so they added this fine mesh filter to catch the gunk (the gunk should not have been created in the first place cos of bad design and bad metallurgy). The filter used to get clogged and starve some part of transmission of lubrication, causing tranny failure, so the next thing ford does is adds a relief valve to lubricate in case the tranny filter get clogged (without solving original problem, that is bad material, bad design). So, which means that if tranny fluid and filter is not changed soon enuf, you have nice abrasive fluid eating your transmission from the inside. Enough said. I have a 99 Nissan Maxima, which I also maintain, and that car is what I would call absolutely magnificent piece of engineering. Never in my life will I buy a ford again. Never, never never.
