Nice, competent, reliable little car. by Gary from Colorado Springs on 08/28/2008. Trim: 1996 Mercury Tracer LTS 4-Door, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: Has been very reliable, even at 150,000 miles, the Mazda 1.8L engine doesn't use a drop of oil and it leaks nothing. Have replaced the normal stuff: Radiator and hoses, struts at 90,000, the original brakes went over 100,000 miles, still on the original clutch. Beyond that, just the normal maintenance items; tires, coolant, fuel and oil filters, spark plugs, etc. Acceleration is good if you use the engine to its high revs. Brakes are good, steering feel is good; the chassis rolls a bit much in turns, but is otherwise a good ride. Returns decent, but not great fuel economy - my 200 HP SVT Contour gets better city and highway MPG. Plenty of room in the trunk, like the fold down rear seats.
Cons: The rear springs broke due to corrosion, but they were replaced when I did new struts. The manual transmission could use a taller 5th gear or even a 6th; this would improve highway fuel economy and lower the cabin noise. The cabin ergonomics and switchgear are good, wish the driver's seat would go back further - its fine for my wife but not for my 6' tall body.
Overall review: This is a nice little car for the money. If you can find one that's been well taken care of (like mine...) it should last awhile and return good service. All in all, we've gotten our money's worth and more out of this car, and I think we'll keep it for a few more years.

Looks good BUT.......... by Jo on 09/27/2001. Trim: 1996 Mercury Tracer 4-Door, Owned 4 years.
Pros: Looks good, handles well...
Cons: I too had to replace the engine at 72,000 miles. Up until then the car was great. The engine blew due to a faulty part that was put into the 1.9 engine. I called to report this to Ford, But they said that if it's not a SAFETY hazard There would be NO recall. I will not buy another Ford after this one....
Overall review: Would not buy another Ford/Mercury again....

A pretty dependable little car. by An MSN Autos Consumer on 02/13/2007. Trim: 1996 Mercury Tracer 4-Door, Owned more than 10 years.
Pros: I feel this car is pretty dependable and a nice little car.
Cons: It does not accelerate that quickly.
Overall review: I have had this car since '96 and my next car will more than likely be a mercury also. This car has not let me down.

Not a Big Fan! by its_rosie from Temple City, CA on 02/08/2005. Trim: 1996 Mercury Tracer 4-Door, Owned 5 years.
Pros: easy to understand controls; ample leg room
Cons: NO LOCK ON THE GAS TANK! I've had my gas siphoned a million times!!Doesn't take off as fast as I would like and the headlights are almost worthless. At night, sometimes I think I'm driving without the lights on, and I panic! The plastic housing around the headlights developed "cataracts" which significantly hinder the lights' usability. Panel lights could be brighter. Not very good with gas. Visor is too big and you can't put it down when the sun gets in your eyes because then you can't see the road! Hard to see around the oval shaped vehicle when you're backing out. Horn is hard to press.
Overall review: I do not think anyone should waste their money on this vehicle
